Class of 2018 Top PGs
Who are the top 10 point guards in the 2018 class heading into the fall? We break them down right here!
PG Ayo Dosunmu (Morgan Park)
Overall Rank: #1
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire
What more can be said that we haven’t already talked about with the top prospect in the state’s senior class? Dosunmu is an electric lead guard with size for position and the ability to get to the rim at will! He has a smooth and explosive first step that allows him to get to the rim where he finishes better than anyone in the state making layups. Big time speed in the open floor and makes an impact on the defensive end as well. Dosunmu is a five star national recruit.
PG Xavier Castaneda (Whitney Young)
Overall Rank: #7
Travel Team: Meanstreets
Castaneda is a high IQ point guard with good strength and speed. He helped lead Whitney Young to a state championship last season and had a strong spring/summer with Meanstreets on the circuit. Also was a standout at the Victor Oladipo camp in July playing against national prospects. Castaneda pushes the tempo, gets others involved, and has the ability to score as well when needed. The biggest thing that he proved was he was able to stay healthy all spring and summer. Mid-major plus prospect.
PG Kendle Moore (Danville)
Overall Rank: #9
Travel Team: Team Rose
Moore is a smooth and wiry point guard that plays with a ton of speed! Really like the way this floor general can play both on and off the ball. With Team Rose he played a lot off the ball showcasing his improved shooting and scoring ability. Definitely projects toward the next level as a scoring lead guard that is a pesky on ball defender and a solid distributor that should be a good fit at the mid-major level.
PG DeAndre Heckard (Romeoville)
Overall Rank: #10
Travel Team: Hoops4Health
Heckard continued to see his stock rise with his play for Hoops4Health this summer. The 6’2” point guard has broad shoulders and quality athleticism. The aspect that we like most about Heckard is that he plays his best in the biggest games. Had strong showings against shoe company teams in both Milwaukee and KC. Strong attacking downhill and getting to the rim. Sound mid-range pull up shooter. Mid-major prospect.
PG Maurice Commander (Curie)
Overall Rank: #19
Travel Team: Young & Reckless
Commander is a left handed point guard that is a high IQ player and an outstanding leader. He showed that this summer with Young & Reckless. The lefty floor general is a prospect that is strong with the ball in his hands. Dynamic attacking in the open floor and gets to the rim. Can also knock down a shot especially off the catch. Great leadership qualities out of this rising senior both as a vocal leader and is the guy that finds others on the floor to make their games shine. The program that lands Commander will be getting a floor general that will be an impact guy at low-major or mid-major level.
PG Xavier Pinson (Simeon)
Overall Rank: #20
Travel Team: Mac Irvin Fire NY2LA
Pinson is a slick and wiry floor general that has a ton of speed. Pushes it in the open floor and has the ability to blow past his defender. Plus passer that sees the floor especially in transition, but is making significant strides in the half court getting others involved. Jump shot is a weapon from mid-range and while streaky from deep he can hit them from beyond the arc. Pinson has asserted himself into the low-major plus and potentially mid-major category.
PG Tyronn Mosley (Orr)
Overall Rank: #21
Travel Team: Illinois Wolves
Mosley made a lot of noise playing with the Illinois Wolves on the grassroots circuit. Plays on the ball quite a bit making good decisions as a bigger guard. As a scorer does most of his damage getting in the lane for runners/floaters. Jump shot is streaky. Hits a couple, but range can be extended. Love his upside on the defensive end as a lockdown defender with his length, lateral quickness, and anticipation. Low-major prospect with mid-major upside.
PG Kaleb Thornton (Bolingbrook)
Overall Rank: #22
Travel Team: Meanstreets
Thornton stands at 6’0” with a slender build. The Bolingbrook lead guard is at his best in transition. Has great speed in the open floor with handles that allow him to weave in and out of traffic while still accelerating. Makes good passes in the open floor as he always has his head up looking to make a play. Looks up the floor for long outlets and also makes crisp dishes in the lane on dribble penetration to shooters when driving. Most of his points come at the rim on layups or short jumpers. Streaky perimeter shooter. Competes on the defensive end as he will get a steal and take it coast to coast on occasion. Thornton is a low-major prospect.
PG Branden Ellis (Warren)
Overall Rank: #35
Travel Team: Kessel Heat
Ellis is an athletic combo guard that gets out and runs! He is best in the open floor where he can score with his speed beating almost any and every opponent down the floor. Finishes well with acrobatic layups and dunks. Quality ball handler that continues to improve in the half court with his feel for the game and can shoot it when given space. Ellis is a LM/D2+ player.
PG Isaiah Fuller (OPRF)
Overall Rank: #35
Travel Team: Mercury Elite
This OPRF lead guard is best at using his speed to get out in the open floor and getting to the rim. Blow by speed both in the half court and transition. Has a knack for finishing well at the rim. Fuller is also a solid defender at the point of attack and sound passer. Low-major/D2 prospect.
