Butler HS Bulldogs-Is This The Magical Year?
The Butler High School Bulldogs have had success recently under head coach Myron Lowry. The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals of the NCHSAA 4-A state finals with the only loss on the season coming to Southwest Guilford High School.
The Bulldogs lose 6 seniors off of the team from last season but return a bulk of their scoring and have brought in some players via transfer.
Returning for Butler is Geralle Gates, a 6-foot-6 senior power forward who has committed to New Orleans. Gates was the Southwest 4-A Conference Player of the Year last season. Assistant Coach LJ Johnson, had this to say about Gates, “Garrele has extended his shooting range this summer from 15 to 20 feet. Increased ball handling, can play the 3 to the 5, he is a great kid to be around on and off the floor. He literally makes everyone around him better.” At 235 pounds, Gates can position himself for rebounds and is hard to guard because of his size. Even with his size, he has a soft touch around the basket and can knock down the mid-range jump shot.
Another senior is DJ Little, a scoring guard who has committed to Queens University in Charlotte.
Transferring in is guard Raquan Brown, a 2019 prospect who transferred after the coaching shake up at Rocky River High School.
6-foot-9 Isaiah Richards has also transferred in from New York. The 2019 prospect, Richards is rated a four-star prospect by some recruiting services. He will provide some length along with Gates in the lowest for the Bulldogs. The New England Recruiting Report, had this to say about Richards-“The 6-foot-9 forward is the real deal. He’s a high caliber big whose combination of leaping ability and foot speed is engineered to amaze. He has big soft hands to catch anything in his range of motion and knows how to block shots and gain possession of the ball all in one play. He made a Sports Center-esque play when he caught a half-court inbounds pass for the alley-oop spike dunk over three defenders. Watch out for this kid, you’ll be hearing about him again for sure.”
