Recruiting Report: Willie Tunks (2018)
Two weekends ago, at the Hardwood Classic in Kansas, Kingdom Hoops guard Willie Tunks sized up a contested 30-footer as time expired and drained it. A marvelous game-winner.
Tunks — a 6-foot-4 Southeast Polk guard — can do that.
One of Iowa’s more skilled shooters, Tunks has grown considerably over the past year-and-a-half. And with some decent size and a sharpshooting ability — along with his flare for the dramatic — he’s got some recruitment starting to come his way.
“Simpson has been watching me and Central had me come to their camp. Coe and Nebraska Wesleyan have shown interest, a lot of D3s schools. And then Briar Cliff too,” said Tunks, who says JuCo may be an option for him.
“I’d like to get some looks from some D2s. I’d do D3 or NAIA. And I’ve also looked into JuCos too, and then maybe going somewhere after that, because I’m still growing.”
Shooting may be his strength, but there’s other things that Tunks brings to the table. He laid it all out during a recent phone interview.
“I think my length helps a lot and I can shoot the ball pretty well and with range. And I can get to the cup pretty easily because of my length,” he said.
“I’m looking to put on some weight, and get stronger and quicker with my D.”
As a junior with the Rams, he averaged 9.3 points and led the team in steals. He’ll be the leading returning scorer this fall.
“I’ll be the point guard this season, and I just need to be a leader and be more vocal with all the younger guys,” said Tunks.
“I’ve really learned to become more vocal this summe with Kingdom Hoops.”
