One of the most improved players in the state over the course of the grassroots season was undoubtedly Select Ohnstad big man Ty Miklowski.
Mikslowski, a 6-foot-5 forward from Burnsville, emerged as a defensive anchor for a team that was among the top non-shoe teams in the state.
“We finished really well this summer,” said Miklowski. “It was a good way to end things. We played maybe our best of the season [in the last tournament in Las Vegas]. It was super fun. I’ve been playing with a lot of these guys for a long time. It’s weird to think we are done now.”
One of the calling cards for Select Ohnstad was the collective defensive tenacity it displayed on a regular basis. Despite the lack of great pure size, the team’s length, versatility and toughness allowed them to grind out more than 40 wins. Miklowski embodied all of those team strengths, going against bigger players on the regular basis but winning his share of battles.
“I think I got tremendously better,” said Miklowski. “Getting an opportunity to play against great players. Mitch is a really good coach. He brings out the best in all of us.
Miklowski’s improved a great deal on the offensive end, in large part due to his expanding range. He’s taking and making more 3-pointers now and while his first instinct isn’t to roam around the arc, he’s become dangerous out there. He’s always been active on the offensive glass and he’s got good basketball smarts which allow him to score on dump offs or kick outs.
“I think I’ve improved my shot a lot,” said Miklowski. “At the beginning of the year I wasn’t really taking those and Mitch convinced me to keep shooting out there and it’s helped me a lot.”
Miklowski’s drawing a lot of college interest from schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
“Locally St. Olaf and Augsburg are recruiting me a lot,” said Miklowski. “I’m looking at engineering schools too. Milwaukee School of Engineering and my dad went to Michigan Tech so that one interests me. Checked them out unofficially. They’ve been talking to me a decent amount too.”
