Recruiting Report: Steve Borneman (2018)
As a jack-of-all-trades at Dallas Center-Grimes, there’s really not much that rising-senior Steve Borneman can’t do.
Last season, as a junior, he averaged 12.6 points on 50 percent shooting, made 22 3s at a 33 percent clip, and averaged a team-best 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals. He also ripped down 4.8 rebounds per game for good measure.
His knack for doing everything, and doing doing it well, has not gone unnoticed by area college coaches.
“I’ve been talking to Coe, and I went to their elite camp. The Wartburg coach has been texting me, and I got a letter from Simpson. My high school coach says some schools have been talking to him too, like Loras,” said Borneman, who says he’d be eager to play D3 ball.
“Any level of college basketball is good basketball, so I’m eager to play wherever. I’d like to play in college, and it’d be nice to get some D2 interest.”
With his senior season just on the horizon, Borneman says it’s his leadership that he’s been working to improve more than anything else.
“One thing I’ve been trying to work on is leadership and talking out on the court, and I’ve been really trying to get my ball-handling and my shooting down, and quickness,” said Borneman, who reflected on his 17U season with Kingdom Hoops.
“It went well. My role on the team was to be more of a defensive player, and rebounder, and making the hustle plays and stuff like that. I would score occasionally when the opportunity presented itself.”
He added: “I consider myself a team player, so I do what the team needs me to do to win. I’m not all about scoring, I try and get my teammates involved and just do whatever the team needs me to do to get the win.”
And as he heads into his final high school season with the Mustangs, Borneman says a state tournament berth is the ultimate goal.
“Our team this year is going to be very senior-led, we should have a very good year,” he said. “I’m hoping to make an all-state team, and I’m hoping that we can bring the team to the state tournament, and hopefully make a run there.”
