Guys who can defend and knock down shots are always going to be in high demand. That skillset sums up Rezi Useh almost perfectly.
Useh, a 6-foot-2, swingman from Monticello has been a quality two-way player for the Magic each of the past two seasons and spent the spring and summer playing grassroots with MN Crossfire. Going against some of the top players in the state and beyond has helped Useh expand his game even further.
“The whole summer was a lot of fun,” said Useh. “It’s a great chance to get yourself better becuase you know you are going against top guys. You can’t fall asleep. You have to play your best. And you don’t know who is watching so you want to put on a good show. My shooting got better and I think I really improved my ball handling and finishing ability around the rim.”
Useh’s best skill is his defensive prowess. At 6-foot-2, Useh’s got long arms, quickness to stick with smaller guards and the strength to fight with bigger wings. His ability to defend at a high level combined with an expanding offensive game has drawn the interest of several colleges.
“Carleton, University of Chicago, Concordia Moorhead; I’ve talked to all of them,” Useh said. “Been to U of Chicago for a camp and a visit. I’ll hopefully visit Carleton sometime in the fall as well. I’m trying to find hte best balance of academics and playing opportunity that I can.”
Useh started making a name for himself as sophomore when he played a big role in Monticello’s run to the state tournament. He’s got one more year with the Magic and is hoping his senior year can be more like his sophomore year and less like last season.
“I expect us to be right there with Delano in a section final,” said Useh. “We’ll be undersized but we have some talented players. We’ll be more mature and I think we’ll be a lot scrappier. I’m excited for winter.”
