Recruiting Report: Jacob Beeninga (2019)
Jacob Beeninga is a winner. He was the PG that led the Trojans to the Class AAAA semi-finals and led the Comets to the NYLA League 16u championship.
The Comets went 31-13 this year with Jacob as the lead guard at the 16u level. They hoisted the beautiful NY2LA trophy in July and everyone will remember the Beeninga 42-point explosion in June in the GPA title game.
“This AAU season went really good for our team,” Jacob told NHR. “I felt like we grew together as a team as the season went on and we had some pretty impressive wins including winning the NY2LA Association. I would say my biggest takeaway from this season would be to not take other teams lightly, as anybody can beat anybody depending on who plays well.”
Jacob is a mature young player as everyone saw at the 16u level and in the state tournament but he wants to become more of a leader as an upperclassmen.
“I would like to improve a few things,” Jacob said. “First of all my leadership on the court and being more vocal. I am also working to improve the consistency of my pull-up jumpers and floaters. I’m also looking to continue to hit the weight room this fall to get stronger.”
Beeninga scored 13 points per game as a sophomore for Wayzata playing on a veteran team. Gavin Baumgartner is now at Moorhead, Ryan Lindberg at St. Thomas, and others moving on to college but Jacob still has hit expectations.
“This year we will have a lot of new guys who are ready to step up and play big for us this year and I think we will be better than people expect us to be,” Beeninga said. “Our goal is to make it back to the Target Center!”
The NSIC watched the Comets several times with Jacob being the main player they wanted to see.
“I have been hearing from Minnesota State-Moorhead a lot, along with Augustana, Winona State and St. Cloud State.”
The Dragons from MSUM have offered Beeninga a scholarship already.
“I was very excited by the offer, as I have a high respect for the program with my older brother (Johnny Beeninga) playing there and Gavin (Baumgartner) going to play with him next year.”
What are Beeninga’s goals for this winter?
“I want to enjoy every moment of this year playing with my friends and get Wayzata back to the State Tournament,” Jacob said of his goals.
