Kolbey Woodard, 6’1″CG, 2018. Northwest Jaguars HS Germantown, MD.
Grassroots Team: MOCO Heat/Team Vito
Kolbey is another very talented player for Northwest HS who caught our attention immediately with his skill-set and athleticism. We saw him play 3 times in the MD Elite Summer League & each time we saw Kolbey he more than reinforced our 1st time instincts that he in an excellent player & college prospect. This spring & summer Kolbey scored 13 ppg & dished out 6 assists per game for the Germantown Heat in Grassroots play. He will once again start for Northwest as a CG and will take over PG duties when his back-court teammate Norval Black is resting. Last year Kolbey averaged 11 ppg & 5 assist for the Jaguars. As we have mentioned, Northwest HS has the talent & ability to beat any team in Montgomery County for the 2017/18 season.
In addition to basketball Kolbey runs Cross Country for Northwest HS. During the off-season Kolbey still does runs of 6-9 miles several times a week. Kolbey says, “My cross country conditioning definitely helps me with basketball. During & after games I do not get tired, while other players seem exhausted during timeouts & after the game.” When watched Kolbey, he always played with very high energy & hustle. Despite playing at relentless pace, at the games conclusions Kolbey looked identical to his arrival before the game began. We like watching him during warmups in which Kolbey displays smoothness, power & nice elevation with a determined demeanor.
This spring & summer Kolbey works out 3 times per week on strength, conditioning & flexibility. He does sprints, plyometrics in addition to several long distance runs. He says,”I am stronger, faster, quicker & my fast twitch muscle has improved. My vertical has gone up and now I can dunk easily.”
In addition to Kolbey’s improved S&C he adds,” My ball handling, court vision and shot have improved since the end of the Northwest basketball season. I do ball handling drills with 2 & 3 balls & shooting drills for my shot off the dribble & spot up” This summer Kolbey displayed an excellent skill set & a high basketball IQ. We saw him score on all levels on a consistent basis, run the point & defend well. He says,” On defense I can beat my man to his spot, apply full court on ball pressure.
In the classroom Kolbey maintains an excellent 3.3 GPA and he is very interested in a Forensic Science major in college. To date Wofford and Delawre State are showing Kolbey interest. His Mother (Robin) helps Kolbey in all facets of his life & Kolbey says, I am blessed to have a Mother like mine.” Additionally, Kolbey looks up to his Cross Country Coach Robert Young, Northwest Head Coach Rob Smith & the NW HS Coaching staff, & he is very close with his teammates.
