Prospect Spotlight: Calvin Harris (2020)
Though he’s Iowa’s 11th-ranked 2020 on the hardwood, 6-foot guard Calvin Harris is certainly one of the nation’s best baseball prospects, too.
During the past year, he’s been offered by Iowa, UCLA, Arkansas and Ole Miss for his prowess on the diamond.
“I really haven’t gotten anything for basketball or football, but definitely for baseball I’ve been fortunate enough to have a few scholarship offers, said Harris. “And that would be the main sport I’m being recruited in fro now.”
He started all 40 games for Western Dubuque this summer as a freshman, and batted .390 while racking up a 4A best 61 RBIs.
He’s a very, very good baseball player.
But last season as a freshman with the Bobcat’s basketball team, he posted some of the best numbers in the the state for his grade level.
We had Harris explain his basketball skill-set during a recent phone interview.
“I’d say a couple of my strengths as a player are getting to the hole and being able to handle the ball. I just like to help the team win in any way possible,” said Harris, who is a versatile threat at the guard spot.
“Last year I was a shooting guard and a point guard, and I played a little bit of three-guard also. And I’ll probably continue to play all three the next three years at WD (Western Dubuque).
On the diamond, Harris plays catcher and outfield, and sometimes infield. He says being a multi-sport athlete is something he’ll continue.
“I really enjoy basketball and I really enjoy baseball, and I also play football which I really enjoy,” said Harris. “It’s tough to pick just one of them over the other. As long as I keep enjoying them, I’ll keep playing them.”
Though Harris didn’t play grassroots ball this spring and summer — he was too busy with baseball — he does work out with University of Dubuque hoopster, TJ Lake.
“I’ve been pretty busy with baseball, we play about every day, so it keeps me busy. When I do workout with TJ Lake, I’ve been working on my shooting, and that’s been a big focus for me,” said Harris.
“Another focus has been working on my ball-handling, driving to the hole and shooting on the run is another big one I’ve been working on.”
