Four freshmen to watch in Northeast Ohio
There are some youngsters who are going to be making a big impact on high school courts this winter in Northeast Ohio, no doubt.
Here is a list of four we’ve seen or heard about that should be ready for those bright lights of varsity basketball competition
Meechie Johnson, 5’9, PG, Garfield Heights.
He has proven to be a capable floor general this summer while leading the varsity team during competition in the Earl Boykins summer league. The nephew of Garfield coach Sonny Johnson, Meechie has a high basketball IQ. He is shifty on the dribble and showed he was not afraid to take the big shot when he connected on a 3-pointer to win a big AAU game in Las Vegas in July.
Seth Wilson, 6’2”, SG/PG, St. Vincent-St. Mary
This kid has gotten a lot of hype over the years and deservedly so. While playing for Tru Game in Las Vegas during a recent AAU tournament he averaged 19.7 points per game to go along with eight rebounds and six assists. His team ended up losing in the finals.
He’s supposed to be the next big thing at the same high school that gave you The Chosen One.
Very strong and is able to get his shot when he wants no matter the level of high school competition. Also has displayed tremendous range and a quick release on a very accurate jump shot.
St. Edward, Gilmour, Westlake were all going after him hard.
He’ll team up with the highly touted Malaki Branham from Columbus, a long and lithe 6-3 wing who can get to the basket as well as shoot.
AJ Farmer, 5’11”, Wing, Lutheran East
It looks like this long playmaker will fit in with the defending state champions. During the summer in the Earl Boykins league he has not looked overmatched against players entering their senior year. He can get into passing lanes to cause turnovers and is crafty scorer inside. Can also block shots on defense with his length.
Raynelle Arnold, 5’9”, G, Warrensville
Looked good in action with the varsity in the summer league. Is strong on the dribble and shows no fear when it comes to taking the ball into traffic. Has a very high basketball IQ according to one AAU coach and should team up nicely with college prospect (2018). He was cited as a player whose stock was on the rise way back in 2016 by Buckeye Prep Report.
