What a weekend in Vegas for Garfield Heights, Johnson clan
It was quite the weekend for the Johnson clan in Las Vegas. Meechie Johnson (2021) and his two cousins Sonny Johnson Jr. (2022) and Marcus Johnson (2026) put on a show at the big AAU showcase event in Sin City.
Meechie, an incoming freshman who will likely start at point guard for his uncle Sonny Johnson at Garfield Heights this winter, scored 29 points in one of his team’s wins. During that performance against a team sponsored by NBA star James Harden and with coaches from Northwestern in attendance, Meechie hit a game-winning 3-pointer.
Sonny Jr., the son of the coach, who is entering the eighth-grade, played in a grade up and still lit up as he averaged more than 20 a game for his team, which won the championship in its division at the prestigious Las Vegas Fab 48.
The best Johnson of them all might be young Marcus (2026). He scored 41 in one of his team’s win.

Gaffney (2019), a 6-8 wing, who is transferring to Garfield after playing his freshman and sophomore years at Villa Angela-St. Joseph picked up offers from Ohio State and Kansas during his time in Las Vegas. He’d already been offered by West Virginia and Cincinnati.
What a summer it’s been for Gaffney, who was ranked No. 112 in the country in his class by Rivals at the beginning of the spring and by the end of the weekend had landed a scholarship offer from a blue blood program like Kansas. Gaffney is ranked No. 2 in Ohio in the class of ’19 by prephoops.com
His frontcourt mate Waller (2019), a 6-9 wing, who is ranked No. 3 in the state in the same class by prephoops.com, received an offer from Kansas State.
