Recruiting Riser: DJ Burns
One prospect that is tracking at the national level is 2019 F DJ Burns of The Georgia Stars who plays his high school basketball at York Prep in York, South Carolina under head coach Frank Hamrick. Burns has had a strong summer/spring playing with The Georgia Stars 16U team and has solidified his name as a national recruit.
HIS GAME
The 6-foot-8 Burns has smooth footwork, a soft touch around the basket and can step out and knock down the mid-range jumper. He is a solid rebounder and can block shots on the defensive end. In The Best of the South, I watched Burns score 12 points on an array of post moves and put-backs off of rebounds.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
Burns had this to say about his recruitment and how his July is going, “July has been great! I’m looking some new recruitment but I am mainly focused on just playing my best. My parents and I have been having conversations with Maryland, Missouri, NC State, Texas Tech, Miami, Central Florida and Clemson.”
PUTTING IN THE WORK
“My goal is to continue extending my range out so that I can play any position that coaches might want me to play on the floor. I want them to look down the bench and say, Burns, go in!” Burns has a strong work ethic and continues to improve every time I see him.
UNOFFICIAL VISITS
Burns will take some unofficial visits over the next couple of months to get a feel of some of campus life at the schools that are recruiting him. “I have been invited to schools and will decide which visits I will attend in the fall.”
PREPHOOPS REACTION
PrepHoops analyst Justin Byerly feels ACC programs at the blue-blood level will start to gain interest in Burns and to see his recruitment rise with some of the Power 5 conferences in the country. You can’t teach 6-foot-8 and the soft touch and smooth post game of Burns, so coaches will be flocking to York, South Carolina to take a look for themselves.
