Prospect Spotlight: Tyler Sansgaard (2020)
Nevada’s 5-foot-10 guard, Tyler Sansgaard, recently showcased his talents in front of us at the Midwest Summer Shootout in Ames, and it was very clear then, that he could become one of the best shooters in Iowa.
We recently caught up with the rising sophomore and discussed his set of skills; shooting was the first thing he mentioned.
“One of my strengths would be shooting, and on defense I just try and make sure I keep my guy in front of me and get a steal,” said Sansgaard.
We at PHIA concur, shooting is definitely a strength of his, here’s evidence: In his first-ever varsity game after the winter break last season, Sansgaard connected on nine 3s.
He says it was just a matter of confidence, simple as that.
“Every time I shoot it, I just try and shoot with confidence,” said Sansgaard. “And I missed my first two, but I stayed confident, and then I made nine in a row.”
He went on to reflect on the rest of his freshman season, in which he averaged 8.9 points per game and shot 47 percent from deep.
“I thought I played good, I probably could have done a little bit more defensively though,” said Sansgaard. “I liked playing with the older guys, they all welcomed me and helped me a lot.”
This spring and summer, the sharpshooting Cub has been playing with All Iowa Attack Black 15U, where he’s learning to impact games in other ways than just his elite shooting.
“I haven’t been able to make it to some tournaments, but the ones I’ve been at my role is to just be a shooter. And at the beginning of the season I wasn’t shooting well, so I just tried to make an impact on defense,” said Sansgaard.
This weekend, he’s down in Kansas City for one final 15U tournament with Attack. He’s hoping to turn some heads during the live period event.
“I’m looking forward to just doing what I can do, and hopefully people see what I can do.” said Sansgaard. “Some things I want to work on are getting to the rim and finishing inside, and then my defense.”
