Prospect Spotlight: Andrew Gibb (2019)
When it comes to elite shooters in Iowa, Andrew Gibb is certainly in the discussion.
Statistically, the 6-foot-2 guard was in fact the best shooter in the state last season as a sophomore. He executed a 50-50-90, shooting 58.1 percent from the floor, 52.4 percent from deep and 90.3 percent from the free throw line — pretty remarkable.
In a recent phone interview with PHIA, Gibb mentioned that shooting is a strength of his, but he’s been working to be known as more than just an elite jump-shooter.
“I think I’m a really good shooter, and I get to the rim very well and get to the free throw line a lot. I’m a pretty good teammate too, I like to get my teammates the ball and make them all happy,” said Gibb, who mentioned he thinks he could repeat the 50-50-90 in the coming years.
“I think I can continue to do that, my teammates last year set me up really well. They got me the ball when I was open, and were really good about that. I’ve still been in the gym every day and I’ve shooting the ball very well this offseason.”
This spring and summer, Gibb has been running with All Iowa Attack, and says things have been going well.
“It’s been really good, I’ve had a good sporing with them. And we’ve been doing OK as a team,” said Gibb.
“I’ve improved a lot at getting to the rim, I don’t feel like just a shooter anymore, I can get to the rim and get to the free throw line too.”
Still a bit under the radar, that should change in the next 12 months. And with good length, and some added height, his sharpshooting might be more noticeable this summer to college coaches.
“I’ve gotten a bunch of camp letters, but not many recruitment letters. The community college in Fort Dodge, Iowa Central, they had me out for some open gyms and to meet their coaches. And then I’ve gotten letters from Briar Cliff, and I went to he Augustana (SD) Elite Camp,” said Gibb, who elaborated on the Augustana camp.
“I really liked to see how I stacked up against some of the best players in the Midwest, and I thought I shot the ball pretty well.”
This summer, the main goal is to simply win games; Gibbs is confident that’s the best way to be recruited.
“I think the best way for me to be seen is for my team to win a lot of games,” he said. “So I just want to win some tournaments and kind of go from there.”
