July Sleepers Watch: 2018 Wings
With the live periods right around the corner, we at Vantage Hoops will be previewing under the radar guys to keep a watch on across the state. Today, we will look at some of the best slept on wings in the state who should see their recruitment pick up with a good July.
- Kobe Tigney | 6’4” | New World VA
Tigney has been under the radar for far too long, and he’s finally starting to see the college interest he deserves. The 6’4” lefty has seen a lot of recent interest from low major and division two schools, and with a big July he could see that interest turn into offers in no time. He’s long, athletic and can stroke it from deep, and at the next level he could be a solid three and d guy that could develop into a very good two way player with the right coaching. He’s also a very good student with a 3.7 GPA.
- Jordan Gibson | 6’3” | Higher Level
Gibson has a lot in common with Tigney. He had a huge spring with Higher Level, and his increase in production from his sophomore to junior year means that he’ll likely have a big senior season as well. He’s rounded out his game from being a shooting wing to an all around scorer on the offensive end, attacking and finishing at the rim much better now. If he can also buy in on the defensive end, Gibson could have a solid niche at the next level and see his stock continue to rise and turn into offers moving forward.
- Brayden Gault | 6’4” | Team Takeover Grey
Gault may not be the most athletic wing on this list, but he knows how to play and has been filling it up all summer for TTO Grey. He has great feel and a high IQ, as he plays with pace to get to his spots off the bounce and works well out of the triple threat. He can stroke it from deep, knows how to use his body to finish in traffic and is an above average rebounder for a wing. If he can continue to shoot it at a high clip, there’s going to be multiple high academic scholarship offers coming his way more than likely.
- James Johnson | 6’5” | Team Takeover Grey
Unlike Gault, Johnson’s biggest attribute is his size and athleticism. He’s a long 6’5” wing that can guard on the perimeter, run the floor and finish in transition. He has a great frame and good upper body strength, a nice looking stroke off the catch and uses his frame and athleticism to rebound well on both ends. He’s really come on as of late, and you can expect a big July and senior season from which should boost his stock.
- Amari Cooper | 6’4” | Team Pro Look
A combo forward with good length and athleticism, Cooper is able to guard and play multiple positions all over the floor. He rebounds extremely well for a wing on both ends of the floor, and his ability to run the floor and finish in transition makes him a walking highlight reel. He’s a good rim protector both in helped and in transition, and he can put it on the floor and create his own shot, and he’s also a good finisher with both hands in traffic. His high motor and versatility means he’ll likely be another Wakefield steal at the next level.
- Terrence Whitfield | 6’3” | River City Reign
Whitfield is taking a post grad year at Massanutten, and with another year dedicated to just basketball he has a chance to become a mid major prospect with his size and athleticism. He’s a versatile defender that can lock up the best perimeter scorer, and in transition he’s a great finisher above the rim. He’s improved both his handle and his jump shot, and as long as he continues to improve in those areas he’ll be a good get at the division one level.
