Christian Guess (2018) on the biggest stage
Events like the adidas Gauntlet give an opportunity for that unknown player to go at some of the country’s top-rated players and make a name for himself.
Such was the case on July 15 when before a packed gym in Spartanburg, SC, Christian Guess (2018) 6’5” W, Shaker Heights, went toe-to-toe with arguably the nation’s No.1 player in Zion Williamson and more than hold his own.
Guess scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds while matching up with the 6’7”, 230-pound Williamson, who has become YouTube sensation thanks to eye-popping dunks. Guess’s squad won 96-91 in overtime over Williamson’s SC Supreme in large part because of the play of Guess.
“I went at him like he was a regular player and I fear nobody,” Guess told prephoops.com after the game. “I go hard the whole game and I checked him the whole game.”
Williamson ended up scoring 33 and grabbing nine rebounds. During one sequence Guess came away with a loose ball near midcourt and in transition tried to dunk only to be met in midair by Williamson and fouled. No dunk for Guess resulted, but it was clear from that play he wasn’t intimidated by Williamson, who’s being recruited by all the major powers.
Guess received big-time help from teammate Robby Carmody (2018), of Mars. Pa., Carmody, a Notre Dame commit, scored 27 points, while Dwayne Cohill (2018), 6’2” G, Holy Name, scored 18 for OBC.
Also making his presence felt in the win for OBC was Dale Bonner (2018) 6’2” G, Shaker Heights, who scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Guess, who had offers from DePaul, Tulsa, Toledo and Kent State, as recently as a couple of weeks ago, will likely pick up more interest after his strong performance at the Gauntlet.
In the five games in Spartanburg, Guess averaged 17.8 points per contest.
