Utah State University Team Camp (Standouts)
I was able to catch several games at 2017 Utah State University team Camp this Weekend. I am highlighting several standouts that played very well.
Steven Ashworth 6’0 Guard 2018 (Lone Peak) showed he is the arguably the best point guard in the class of 2018 in Utah. He led Lone Peak as they dominated Bountiful by 25 points. Ashworth showed his ability to make everyone around him better with his willingness to get everyone involved. He also showed his range as he knocked down several three pointers and also showed he has a nice floater inside the paint. Ashworth would be a great addition at the D2 level and has a chance at playing at the lower D1 level.
John Mitchell 6’3 Guard 2019 (Corner Canyon) has a smooth game where is able to knock down the three ball with consistency and can also get into the paint to score. I like how he rarely forces the issue and moves the ball when there is nothing open. I think he will have a big-time junior year for a talented Corner Canyon team. Mitchell is a D2 prospect who should see some more recruitment in the years to come.
Jackson Brinkerhoff 6’7 Forward 2018 (Lone Peak) is a very solid big-man that is skilled in the post and has the ability to step out and hit the mid-range jumper. He is a good passer out of the post and is an unselfish player and like many Lone Peak kids, Brinkerhoff has a very high basketball IQ. He is a D2 prospect and would be a great addition for a college program.
Hayden Welling 6’8 Forward 2019 (Corner Canyon) has sprouted up to 6’8 which has put him on the radars of several D1 schools. He is still fairly raw but has come along way in his development. Welling is still getting used to his body and doesn’t have a ton of post moves yet. He is a very good defender and also rebounds at a high level. Welling is a D1 prospect and I think his recruiting will heat up in the next year or so.
