Urbandale Shootout: Saturday Standouts (Part II)
2019 Trayvon Williams, 6’3 G (Valley)
Williams blossomed into a star in front of everyone in the gym’s eyes today. He was sitting for the entire first half, meanwhile Garrett Sturtz was largely having his way with the Tigers. When Williams was inserted in the second half, he immediately made a huge impact, both offensively and defensively. He blocked several of Sturtz’s shot attempts, and erupted for 13 points offensively. We knew Williams could play, he’s our 16th-ranked 2019, he proved it to a lot more people today.
2018 Garrett Sturtz, 6’2 G (Newton)
Every time we see him, Sturtz has us shaking our head in disbelief, today was certainly no different. He nearly willed his team to a win over 4A state runner-up Valley, notching 34 points, and was doing it with his usual savvy and array of moves. Most impressive was his defensive performance; his instincts paired with his great length make him one of the most dangerous off-the-ball defenders in the state. We think he could be among the state’s leaders in steals and blocks next winter.
2020 Kyle Long, 5’10 SG (Newton)
One of several great shooting performances today came for this Newton sophomore-to-be. He was a perfect compliment to Sturtz, and was clutch too, hitting several crucial 3-balls for the Cardinals. In all, Long connected on seven 3s, and with so much attention being paid to Sturtz, Long could get his share of open looks next winter.
2018 Sam Ingoli, 6’4 PG (Dowling)
Always good, Ingoli willed his Dowling team to a hard-fought win over one of 2A’s best teams, Van Meter, this afternoon. He was his usual patient and selective self, and was running the offense masterfully. Ingoli was getting tough buckets in the paint, and getting to the line with regularity (eight made FTs), and nearly always made the right pass, even dropping one jaw-dropping dime in transition.
2018 Blake Clark, 6’3 G, (Dowling)
Well, we didn’t know that he could get up and slam the way he did the end the game against Van Meter. Even more impressive is the jam came after a steal from an inbound, and with the Maroons up just one with 45 seconds to go. We knew Clark was good, and he was good prior to that moment. But that play was certainly eye-opening, and a glimpse into how critical he could be to this Dowling team’s success.
2018 Jack Trudo, 6′ G (Van Meter)
Van Meter was looking for offense and Trudo delivered in a big way. He was red-hot in the second half against Dowling, canning four 3s and scoring 14 in the second frame alone. When he gets hot, he’s tough to contain, and what’s best for Van Meter, is they seemingly have several players capable of the same feat.
2018 Nathan Johnson, 6’6 G/F (Waukee)
Johnson looked very comfortable in the role of primary scorer, and he was letting his shots fly with confidence today. He hit three triples, and was scoring at the rim, and most impressive was the MJ turnaround contested jumper from 15-feet. At that moment we knew that the senior-to-be was playing with supreme confidence. He’ll be one of the best players in the CIML next season.
