Take 5: NBPA Top 100 National Standouts Day 1
The NBPA Top 100 camp kicked off yesterday at John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, VA. There was tons of talent throughout the gym, so picking a a few standouts is far from easy, but there were a handful of guys from across the country that really showed out and came to play on the first day. Here’s five guys who wasted no time getting it going on the biggest of stages.
Andre Reeves Jr. | 6’5” WG | Brimmer and May (MA) 2018
Reeves came out in the second game of the day and was lights out from all over the court. In the first half, he had a string of 11 straight points where he hit three from downtown and threw down a vicious dunk in transition. He shot it efficiently, finishing with 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting and 4-for-5 from deep, and with his size and ability to make tough shots from all three levels he’s in early contention as a breakout star at this event.
Cole Anthony | 6’2” PG | Archbishop Molloy (NY) 2019
Talk about a highlight reel, Anthony’s poster dunk in game two of the event was the talk of the camp, and he almost had an even better one that he was fouled on and back rimmed with his left hand. The son of former NBA point guard Greg Anthony, Cole did more than just provide a nice highlight reel for the videographers. He finished with 16 points, nine assists and six rebounds in the game, and best of all he only turned the ball over one time as the primary ball handler. He’s also a dog on the defensive end, where he can turn ball handlers the length of the court and challenges every pass when on the ball.
Patrick McCaffery | 6’8” WF | Iowa City West (IA) 2019
It’s safe to say this kid knows how to play, since his father is the Head Coach for the Iowa Hawkeyes. He also has a little toughness to him that not many people would think looking at him. He’s extremely long, and he’s a versatile offensive player that showed the ability to score at multiple levels with ease. He attacked the rim and finished through contact, was good in helpside defense and was an efficient scorer throughout the two games he played in. He never tries to do too much, and he’s willing to do the little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet as well.
Antoine Davis | 6’0” CG | Houston Homeschool (TX) 2018
Davis was possibly the best shooter in the camp on day one, the issue was he didn’t get enough looks when he was open! He finished 5-for-8 from deep in his two games, and his form and release are as picture perfect as they get. He can shoot it off the catch or off the bounce, read the pick-and-roll and made defenders pay for going under, and he filled lanes correctly in transition where he wasn’t afraid to let it fly. He’s the type of kid that when he’s open from deep, you need to be unselfish and get him the rock!
Simisola Shittu | 6’9” PF | Vermont Academy (VT) 2018
What do my notes say about Shittu? MAN CHILD! He played like a man among boys on day one, with a big game of 22 points and eight rebounds in the second game set. He showed the ability to run the floor, finish above the rim in transition and was a monster on the glass and while protecting the paint. His blue collar attitude, along with his great frame and athleticism made him one of the best big men on the first day of action.
