Summer League Scouting Reports: Landry-Walker
Court was in session for the third time in Landry-Walker’s Summer League on Tuesday and the Charging Bucs defended their home court once again posting two more wins over Sophie B. Wright and Scotlandville.
The defending 5A champs lost a few key players from last year’s team but this year’s group is poised to continue the tradition of top notch basketball at Landry-Walker, which has already produced the likes of Mississippi State’s Lamar Peters, Oklahoma State to Southern Miss PG Tyree Griffin and Tulane big man Blake Paul.
The Charging Bucs’ 2019 class appears to be a special group and here’s a little of what they’ve been bringing to the table for Landry-Walker thus far. You can also click here to watch the Bucs against Scotlandville on Tuesday.
Tory Cargo — Landry-Walker 2019 6’4 CG
Most of the court side talk amongst bystanders was centered around Tory Cargo on Tuesday and for good reason. The 6-foot-4 prospect drilled 5-6 3-pointers throughout the day showing long range ability with the confidence to let if fly in tight spaces, and he also went airborne for a huge dunk on a fast break attempt. Cargo had a breakout performance back in March during the Icebreaker HoopFest tournament and he continues to showcase just how good he can be.
Dywan Griffin — Landry-Walker 2019 6’2 PG
Griffin is an aggressive lead guard that flourishes on the offensive end as a passer and he can also score from all three levels. He changes speeds well, is difficult to stay in front of and really rises to the occasion when challenged on the court. Griffin is the team’s most polished prospect at this point and has already proven himself on the big stage earning Most Outstanding Player honors for the Charging Bucs during the semifinals and championship of the state tournament.
Shadon Green — Landry-Walker 2019 5’9 PG
Green is one of those “if he were 6’2, he’d be recruited by x, y and z” cases. He’s a quick, speedy guard with a tight handle that has a great feel for the game. He’s rarely in a rush and will probe the defense looking for creases where he can find teammates for easy looks or flip in a floater over bigger defenders. Green is also a capable shooter from mid or long range and will pester opponents at the point of attack on defense as well.
Semaj Matthews — Landry-Walker 2018 6’6 F
The elder statesman of the group, Matthews is a multi-faceted big man that gives the Charging Bucs a lot of versatility of both ends of the floor. He challenges shots well at the rim with his length and athleticism and will also fight for tough rebounds. Offensively, he’s a reliable player inside who is fully capable of finishing above the rim but perhaps unexpectedly, will step out to 3-point range and knock down his fair share of shots as well.
Tyrus Crawford — Landry-Walker 2019 6’5 F
A true paint protector, Crawford takes pride in turning opponents’ shots away at the rim. He was able to get to a couple on Tuesday and altered a bunch of others while mixing it up for rebounds as well.
Ramon McGrew — Landry-Walker 2019 6’3 W/CG
There are only so many minutes to go around but McGrew always finds a way to make an impact when he’s on the floor. A 6-foot-3 prospect with good size and athleticism, McGrew can run the floor, block shots, finish above the rim and has range out to the 3-point line off the dribble.
Jason Joseph — Landry-Walker 2019 5’9 G
Joseph is a pure shooter with a quick trigger and he rarely hesitates if given space. His primary job is undoubtedly to stretch the floor for the Charging Bucs but he also has no problem putting the ball on the floor and making smart plays afterwards.
