Summer League Scouting Reports: Crescent City vs. Curtis
The Crescent City Summer League has provided teams with some good competition over the last month and one of the better games in the league was between Crescent City and Curtis earlier this month.
The Pioneers had just wrapped a session of games at UNO and coach Shaun Dumas almost decided to sit his starters but decided to let them give it a go. Both teams started a but Crescent City got rolling and held a comfortable lead for most of the game until a couple of back-to-back 3-pointers made it a game with under a minute to go.
The Pioneers were able to survive Curtis’ comeback, though, and held on for a 49-47 win. You can watch the matchup here.
Crescent City
Devonta Harris — 2018 6’0 G
Harris is a high level scorer that’s always finding ways to put the ball in the basket. He fueled the Pioneers to the win nailing a handful of 3-pointers and attacking the rim finishing through contact.
Terrence Smith — 2018 6’2 PG
Smith is a lead guard with good size and speed that does a great job setting the tempo for the Pioneers. He’s a good decision maker on the break and is a threat to score or find teammates for easy shots in transition.
Byron Joshua — 2020 5’9 PG
Joshua came up big for Crescent City with a nifty off-hand layup through contact to break a 47-47 tie with just under 20 seconds to play, and it turned out to be the game-winner. He’s a very talented prospect who routinely rises to the occasion in big games and big moments, and you can read and see more of Joshua here.
Kevin Charles — 2018 6’7 F
Charles was ineligible last season but he’s been making an impact with the Pioneers over the summer. He used all 6’7” of his long frame to rise for a big dunk against John Curtis and will be a welcome addition to last year’s Division V state championship roster.
Rodney Munson — 2019 5’11 G
Yes, this is that Rodney Munson, the one from De La Salle but now he’s running with the Pioneers. His release is a bit odd but he was knocking down a bunch of 3’s as he always does. The rich got richer with Munson joining a deep, talented team and this group is going to be dangerous in 2017-18.
Cory Johnson — 2018 5’9 PG
Johnson may be the purest point guard of the group with his ability to direct traffic and find teammates in good spots. He’s a mainstay in the Pioneers’ deep rotation of guards and his impact shouldn’t be underestimated.
Curtis
Donell Jones — 2018 6’4 G/W
Jones may be a true diamond in the rough. He didn’t play summer ball so this was my first time seeing the 6-foot-4 prospect and I was impressed. A strong, athletic wing, Jones can handle the ball a bit, shoots off the dribble and finishes through contact in the paint. He’s also a two-sport athlete playing receiver and quarterback for the Patriots and excels in the classroom boasting a 26 on his ACT.
Dawson Crosby — 2018 5’10 G
Crosby is a confident, knock-down shooter with a quick trigger from deep range. He’s just as comfortable pulling up as he is in set situations and will also create opportunities for teammates off the dribble.
Andrew Stagni — 2018 5’11 G
Stagni gives the Patriots another player who consistently makes shots from deep to help spread the floor. He’s most effective when his feet are set but will take and make a few off the dribble as well.
