Recruiting Report 2020: Hunter Dickinson
Hunter Dickinson, 6’11”, C, 2020, DeMatha HS Hyattsville, MD.
Grassroots Team: Team Takeover 17 & U:
This past week Hunter was rated as the # 9 player in the nation for 2020 by ESPN, just behind local PG Jeremy Roach from Paul VI who plays in the WCAC at Paul VI HS. Hunter attended the prestigious NBPA Top 100 Camp at The University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, from June 13-18. He was only one of 5 underclassman and the lone 2020 player for the 100 players who attended. He was nominated as a top 7 Big and was very impressive all camp. This summer Hunter has been so dominant, he was moved up from Team Takeover 16 & U and is now playing for TTO 17 & U team on the Nike EBYL Grassroots circuit. He has had several big outings and is more than holding his own.
We first saw Hunter early in the 2016/17 season at DeMatha where he opened many eyes as a true freshmen. It was very obvious that he had great fundamentals and was very skilled. Hunter played primarily in the low post and as a paint defender. Last season we saw Hunter go to the floor for loose balls and mix it up in the paint. He clearly plays with an edge and will not back down. We awarded Hunter 5th Team ALL DMV -495 Team as freshmen this past season and he could be 1st team after the 2017/18 season.
We spoke with Hunter last night after he arrived home late Sunday from Nike Elite Top 100 camp in St. Louis featuring 81 2019 and 19 2020 players. Hunter said. “I did very well at the camp, and I coming along in my development. Some of my strengths are low post offense and defense, passing, and shooting.”Hunter has displayed an array of low post moves and mid range scores at the Maryland Team Camp a few weeks ago and at the DeMatha BSN Summer League. Hunter scored from either hand, has a jump hook right and left, spin moves, drop step, and power moves. Additionally, Hunter can shoot from the 3 point line and he adds, “Last year I hit three 3 pointers vs Good Counsel and I am allowed to go out and shoot 3s depending on the defense. While I do most of my work in the paint, I want to be able to go outside more at the next level.”Perhaps we could call Hunter a Hybrid 5 in the future.
Physically, Hunter is in great shape and adds, “I weigh in at 250, but in college I think 265 could be my goal. At the NBPA camp I measured at 6’11” in bare feet and a 7’2.5 wingspan. I work on basketball 6 days a week with DeMatha Coach Cromer on overall basketball skills and Coach Tobe with strength and conditioning. Additionally, I have my Trainer with Evolution basketball who is Alex Harris. We work on explosion, agility and my arms”
In the classroom Hunter carries a 3.64 GPA and he is very focused and mature for his age, appearing to be unfazed by his high ratings. The Dickinson’s have a very close knit family including his very nice & supportive parents Kathy & Jim Dickinson who attend every game they can for Hunter. I asked several Dickinson family members where Hunter gets his toughness from. Everyone agrees it is from Hunter’s older brothers Jason, Grant and Ben who helped mold him as a player in a great way. Ben who was a an excellent player himself. will be an Assistant Coach at DeMatha this year.
Hunter currently holds offers from Notre Dame, Alabama and Penn State, but Hunter’s offer list will soon expand.
We will be covering DeMatha & Hunter extensively this coming season as well as the DeMatha BSN Summer League which concludes on Monday July 3, stay tuned.
