Prospect Spotlight: Traymond Willis-Shaw (2020)
Name: Traymond Willis-Shaw
School: Westover HS
Height: 6’6
Class: 2020
Westover HS has a very rich basketball tradition that goes back many years to include Former 1st Round NBA draft pick Eric Maynor who attended Westover prior to a stellar college career at VCU. Just recently they had two more players receive scholarship offers to attend D1 & D2 programs in Damani Applewhite (South Carolina State) & Adrian Norwood (Fayetteville State University). It’s easy to see why so many players move on from the Westover HS, they have an outstanding combination of coaching, offseason work and chemistry just about every year to get the most out of their guys.
Last year while stopping in to a preseason open gym we got the chance to see quite a bit of young talent but one player in particular that stood out was Traymond Willis-Shaw. With nice height and a very long wingspan he automatically grabs your attention when you see him play, although he didn’t have his best season last year, you could see the potential without a doubt. Just last week we got the chance to see him again and it was very impressive to see how far he’s come in a short span of time. He was aggressive attacking the rim, with multiple dunks attempts that made the crowd and his teammates leave their seats. Defensively he was very active, communicating well with teammates as well as causing numerous disruptions on that end of the floor by altering and blocking shots. There is no doubt in my mind that he has the potential to be a D1 prospect, it’s will all come down to how hard he works , the potential for him to special is clear without a doubt.
Quote from his Coach (Asst Coach at Westover): ‘‘ He’s still learning but is getting better and better, I think once he realizes just how special he can be, it will all click and he can turn into a special player. He’s got the tools to be successful.’’
