Both sharpshooter and baseball standout, Van Meter junior Mitchell Pomeroy is riding a big wave a success in both sports at Van Meter right now.
He’ll be a key contributor with the baseball team this summer, and that’s after being one of the best shooters in the state on the hardwood this past winter.
Pomeroy says baseball is the sport he prefers, but he loves both, and either could be an option at the next level.
“Baseball is definitely my favorite, but I enjoy both of them a lot and would be interested in playing either or both at the next level,” said Pomeroy, who says he hasn’t seen any interest yet for hoops.
“I don’t really have much of a preference for what level (I get recruited by), I just want to hear from anyone.”
As a junior with the Bulldogs, Pomeroy averaged 9.6 points per game as the sixth-man for the state qualifier. Most impressive was his 49.5 percent 3-point percentage (50-101).
“Shooting 3s is definitely my strength, and for Van Meter I come off the bench so I can provide a spark on offense. Pretty much just 3-pointers is what I’m best at,” said Pomeroy.
“I’m in the gym all the time, trying to improve my shot. And my team was so balanced, that I got a lot of open looks because defense couldn’t really key in on one guy.”
This summer on the 17U circuit, the 6-foot-1 prospect says he’s working on his ability to get to the rack.
“I definitely need to be more of a dual threat and not just hang around the 3-point line,” said Pomeroy. “I want to be able to score around the basket, so that defenses can’t just focus in on me out there.”
He spent his spring with Kingdom Hoops X, one of Iowa’s better 17U teams. He says he’ll play with them intermittently this summer, in between baseball obligations.
“Our spring went well, our team is pretty balanced; we can all score and no one is really a complete standout,” he said. “I’ll be at a lot of team camps and open gyms this month, and depending on baseball, I’ll probably play some more with Team X later in the summer.”
