2019 Rankings Breakdown: Beltway Guards Part 1
PrepHoops Maryland recently updated the class of 2019 player rankings. Getting a list of 75 players and choosing which rank best fits the individual was an extremely difficult challenge. With most of the list consisting of Division I prospects, there is no shortage of talent to go around.
The D.C. Metropolitan Area is known for breeding elite talent in the sport of basketball. The class of 2019 is no different. Here’s a look at part one of the Beltway guards from the rankings.
JUSTIN MOORE | 6’3 G | DEMATHA/TEAM TAKEOVER | #2 OVERALL
Justin Moore suffered an unfortunate knee injury which cost him most of his sophomore year, but he had been off to a fantastic start before going down. We expect Moore to get back on track this season, as he is without question the most well rounded guard we’ve seen in the class.
RJ BLAKNEY | 6’5 G | GORETTI/TEAM MELO | #5 OVERALL

Blakney has blossomed into arguably the most complete guard in the region. Versatility is his best asset, and his consistency with his perimeter jump shot really improved. Blakney can guard virtually any position on the floor. He is a tremendous athlete, and a big time playmaker.
SHERIF KENNEY | 6’4 G | RCCA/NEW WORLD | #6 OVERALL

Kenney has the size, skill, and feel to be a high major point guard. He has great touch, and score from anywhere on the floor. Kenney seeks contact on his drives, and is strong enough to finish in most cases.
CASEY MORSELL | 6’3 G | ST. JOHN’S/TEAM TAKEOVER | #9 OVERALL

Morsell initially got on the floor as a result of his defensive prowess, but has increasingly become a more consistent threat offensively. Morsell is an acrobatic finisher, and uses both hands well. He’s a much improved ball handler. He can create space and make shots from both mid range and downtown.
JAY HEATH | 6’3 G | WILSON/TEAM ST8MENT | #10 OVERALL

With his strong run of play this spring for Team St8ment, Jay Heath is quickly establishing himself as one of the top guards in 2019. A lockdown defender with a non-stop motor, Heath rebounds out of his area and can score from all three levels.
