2018 Rankings Breakdown: Baltimore Guards Part 2
As the breakdowns for the 2018 player rankings continue, take a look at the breakdown from the Baltimore guards part one here and forwards at this link.
Following is a continuation of the Baltimore guards that were included in the rankings:
L.J. Owens | 6’4 G | Severn/D.C. Blue Devils | #24 overall
Owens is a smooth scorer from all three levels. While he can play off the ball, his best moments come when he is breaking down his defender off the dribble. The 6’4 guard handles well enough to create space between himself and the defender to rise up for a jumper. Owens currently holds 10 offers, some of the schools involved include Kansas State, William & Mary, and Hofstra.
Josh Cornish | 6’2 G | Calvert Hall/Team Melo | #25 overall
Even at no. 25 overall, Cornish is a sneaky good prospect considering he is a bucket-getter. Size wise, he isn’t a shooting guard at the collegiate level, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the tools to become an effective point guard. Cornish prides himself in his ability to put the ball in the hole from anywhere on the floor, but his main priority this summer is to add point guard traits to his skill set. He will be a part of a very tough core for the Calvert Hall Cardinals this year where his scoring will be depended upon. He holds one offer currently from Southern Utah.
Jaylin Andrews | 6’4 G | Boys’ Latin/Team BBC | #31 overall
Andrews can fill up the stat sheet effectively throughout the course of a game. During his junior season for Boys’ Latin, he averaged 7.6 rebounds, a hair under four assists, and 1.8 steals per game to go along with 14.3 points. If there’s one thing Andrews wants to be known for it’s versatility. Even if that means being thrown in at the power forward position and battling in the paint. The 6’4 guard is focusing on his body this summer in hopes to become much stronger, which will ultimately mean a mismatch for his opposition whether it be a smaller guard or a slower big man. Lafayette, Navy, Tulsa, and Wagner are among the schools that have expressed interest in Andrews.
Da’Shawn Phillip | 6’4 G | Dunbar/Team BBC | #43 overall
Phillip is another player that makes his impact felt on just about every statistical category. He has a strong frame and can absorb contact around the rim while finishing a shot, or he can bring his match up out to the perimeter where he can rise over top for a jumper. He’s always been an impressive rebounder for a guard. Even during his sophomore season for Dunbar, he averaged seven per game. Defensively, Phillips has active hands with a mixture of high athleticism that often times sparks a steal and transition opportunity for his team. James Madison is his sole offer at the moment.
Montrell Horsey | 6′ G | Joppatowne/Team Melo | #46 overall
Horsey will be the top player next season in the UCBAC Conference in Harford County. For the Mariners, he’s expected to be the go-to guy as indicated by his 20 point per game average last season. When it comes to his scoring, Horsey is more of a three-point or rim guy. He may be a smaller guard, but he has a quick release to help get his shot off against quick close outs. Horsey can also take it amongst himself and get into the paint where he’s also to be proven effective. The three schools that have offered him thus far include James Madison, UT-Martin, and Cal-State Northridge.
