Recruiting Report: Matt Loney (2018)
Frankfort 6-foot-2 guard Matt Loney has a big summer ahead on the 17U circuit, and hopes he can turn his interest into offers.
Right now, Loney — Michigan’s 43rd-ranked 2018 — has just little interest coming in, but his ultimate goal is a D2 scholarship, or even walking-on with an area D1.
“I’ve been reached out to by little schools. I’ve been talked to by Northern Michigan, they’ve talked to me a little bit. Also Hope College a little bit. Nothing much though, honestly that’s about it,” said Loney.
“I’ve been going to a lot of camps, I went to the Ferris State camp and the Grand Valley State camp. I think those schools would something I’d be interested in. Or maybe walking on somewhere D1, or D2 scholarship would be good.”
A lengthy guard, Loney says his strengths are rebounding from the guard spot, and a high basketball IQ.
“I’m not scoring dominant, I’ll help my teammates get buckets first. I take good shots, I try not to take bad shots, and I try and limit turnovers,” said Loney. “I have a long wingspan and I can get my shot off pretty much whenever I want.”
His junior season with the Panthers, Loney says he was too unselfish, and looked to pass more then he should have.
Next season the goal is to be more aggressive.
“I think I tried to just kind of work it around too much, and I needed to go and be a little more selfish, I was too unselfish this season,” he said. “Next season I’ll try and be the leader on the court and the one making the plays.”
In the meantime, he’ll spend his summer with Parallel 45, and they’ll be active over the next five weeks.
“I thought I played pretty well this spring, better than I did during the high school season,” said Loney. “I need to improve on my scoring, shooting, and ball-handling this summer.”
