Recruiting Report: Sam Vascellaro (2018)
Sam Vascellaro was the second-leading scorer (13 PPG) for a St. Thomas Academy team that was a pleasant surprise. It made a run all the way to the Class AAA state tournament with first-year coach Jason Birr. Now, Sam is playing for Fury Antl (the second 17U Fury team) and having fun while getting better and drumming up new exposure.
“So far AAU has been a great experience,” Vascellaro told NHR. “Last summerI didn’t play (AAU), so this year it’s something new and very fun for me. I always look forward to going to Fury practices. Overall, it’s been a great experience so far.”
Standing at about 6-foot-4 and pretty skilled, Sam is working to round out his game as a wing.
“Skill-wise, I’m really trying to improve my shot and ball handling,” he said. “Along with those two things I really want to start using and going to my left more and making my left hand a better strength in my game.”
After playing 22 games with Fury Antl, several college programs have reached out to Vascellaro with interest.
“So far a lot of D3 schools have contacted me,” he said. “Concordia-Moorhead, Saint Mary’s, Gustavus, SJU. I just took a visit to SJU on Tuesday. I really am looking for the right fit when it comes to college. I’m hoping to eventually have some D2 schools look at me.
“When it comes to actually attending college, I just hope to find one where I can play basketball at a competitive level and have it be a good fit for me.”
Fury Antl is 11th in NHR’s current 17U team rankings. You can catch the squad this weekend at the Fury Shootout.
