Prospect Spotlight: Nate Seelye (2018)
Comets Servaty is one of the top AAU teams in the state and while the first thing one might notice about them is their incredible size, they’ve gotten great play from a number of guards including Grand Rapids wing Nate Seelye.
Seelye helped form something of a three-headed monster during his junior year at Grand Rapids with Jake Skelly and Brock Schrom and before he takes on the go-to guy role in high school, he’s spending his summer making noise with the Comets.
They just wrapped up a strong weekend last week, taking second in the Fury Shootout, playing seven games in about 26 hours before losing in the championship to a stellar Fury Wilde team.
Seelye was one of the standouts during the team’s successful weekend.
“It was a fun weekend; tiring,” Seelye said with a chuckle. “Monday my legs were pretty sore. We have definitely progressed chemistry wise. We’re still learning how to play with each other but we’ve gotten a lot better.”
Seelye’s got great size on the wing at 6-foot-3 with long arms and he uses that size to his advantage on both ends of the floor. He’s a creative slasher who can not only score but also make plays for his teammates and his length is an asset on the defensive end.
Seelye said he’s heard from several colleges including Valley City State and SMSU as well as Bemidji though his high school coach.
Playing on a team as post-centric as Comets Servaty is can be challenging for guards who have gotten used to being the go-to guys for their high school teams. Seelye said playing with guys like Jordan Belka, Justin Balcome and Grand Rapids teammate Blake Smith can actually make the game easier.
“We have big guys that can make plays and shoot which makes things a lot easier for me,” said Seelye. “It’s fun playing with a lot of those guys. That can help me as a defender too because I can really press up and play hard man-to-man on the perimeter. We want to just win games, get better as a team and as players.”
