Prospect Spotlight: Cal Wright (2018)
The first thing that stands out with Comets Servaty is its collective size. A guy who flies under the radar who makes a big impact is Mora guard Cal Wright.
Wright averaged more than 20 points per game in his junior season and while he’s not asked to score at near that rate with his AAU club, he’s finding ways to contribute to the team’s success.
“There have been ups and downs,” said Wright. “I’m working hard on the defensive end. I haven’t played as well as I’d like offensively so I’ve been trying to make up for it defensively. That’s more my role on this team.”
Wright and Comets Servaty recently took second in the Fury Shootout and will be playing in the Northstar State Tournament next. The team started the season a little slow but has enjoyed a lot more success in recent tournaments.
“It’s been going good, we’re really starting to play well as a team,” said Wright. “The start was a little difficult as we were trying to adapt to new roles. It’s a good group of guys and we’re really starting to play better together.”
At 6-foot-2, Wright has great size to play on the perimeter. He’s strongly built and can handle primary or secondary ball handling responsibilities. He’s at his best when he’s attacking the rim and his ability to finish and play in traffic are assets on that end of the floor. His defense has become a big strength as well and he’s showing that off more and more.
“I’m always willing to do what it takes to win,” said Wright. “In high school I’m more the go-to guy and the ball is in my hands a lot more. With the Comets it isn’t like that as much so I try to lock down the other team’s best perimeter player and when i have opportunities to score I will score.”
Wright said he’s heard from Jamestown and Bemidji State in particular on the recruiting front as well as several other colleges. With the AAU season being at roughly the halfway point, he’s hoping to continue trending upward individually and with his team.
“As a team I just want us to keep growing and improving,” said Wright. “Making steps forward and competing in more tournaments. Individually just play my heart out and hopefully get noticed. Do whatever it takes for my team to win.”
