Player Spotlight: Kavon Ward (2018)
AAU: Carolina Thunder
Height: 5’10
Class: 2018
Hometown: Smithfield, NC
My first time getting to see Kavon Ward play was during a Big Shots tournament in Greensboro while he was playing with Team Buckets 16U out of Jacksonville, NC. He exceled on the floor in transition and had a very solid frame, without a doubt he was the team’s leader not only in scoring but also communication and attitude wise. As a sophomore on high school squad he was solid role player averaging about 10 PPG , which showed that he understands how to be the star but also how to be a teammate. Just recently I got the chance to see him again, this time in Erwin, NC with the Carolina Thunder at a one day event hosted by Dwight Miller. He didn’t have his best day scoring the ball but you could see the talent within him and how much he can impact a game even if his shot is not falling.
What makes him special?
Kavon is what I would call a versatile scorer at the Guard spot, meaning he can score the ball in multiple ways for a guard so if his shot is not falling he can still have a large impact. He does a great job of getting out into transition and has nice speed and athleticism, so once he’s headed down court with a full head of steam, he’s very difficult to stop. On the other end of the floor he brings it as well, defensively he uses his quick feet and hands to cause problems for defenders. Kavon also does a very good job of playing the passing lanes which helps him to come up with steals to get his team out into transition for easy buckets.
Quote from his Coach: ‘‘Kavon is a coach’s dream player, he gives it his all each and every possession. He can guard the best player from the opposing team and can shoot it from just about anywhere.’’
