Iowa’s Spring Winners — Part I
2019 DJ Carton, 6’2 PG (Quad City Elite 16U)
He catapulted up our rankings up to No.25 after a stellar sophomore season, and that’s still far too low. He’ll be a sure-thing top-10 and could creep into the top-5 in the next installment after picking up a pair of Division I offers during the April live periods, from North Dakota and IUPUI.
2019 Tyreke Locure, 5’10 PG (MOKAN Elite 16U)
Though not many guys have picked up offers yet this spring, Locure’s North Dakota offer is really not surprising. What is surprising is that it’s the only offer he has up to this point. We expect that single offer to become a lengthy list by summer’s end. It’ll be interesting to see if Iowa and Iowa State get more involved.
2019 Noah Hart, 6’3 PG (Iowa Barnstormers 16U)
We’ve seen this kid dominate at camps and exposure events several times now, most recently when he earned MVP honors at the Future Stars Camp in Dubuque. He’s a tall and cerebral true point guard with a butter jumper. He’ll start next season at Waukee, and that’s when the recruitment might really start to take shape.
2018 Derrick Diggins, 6’2 G (Team Iowa 17U)
The more we see of this explosive guard, the more we like him. He plays with tenacity, and he’s definitely one of the more athletic leapers in Iowa. His blow-by ability and competitiveness make us think he could compete at a high-level D2 school, maybe even low D1.
2019 Japannah Kellogg, 6’5 SF (All Iowa Attack 16U)
He grew up as a post and has been working for awhile now to develop into a wing; that’s the story with this rangy Ames product. The triumph is that he’s done a tremendous job of making that transition. And at 6-foot-5 with nice length and an ability to put the ball on the deck and get to the hoop, he’ll turn a lot more heads this summer.
2019 Trey Hutcheson, 6’5 G/F (Iowa Barnstormers 16U)
Already a top-10 prospect in Iowa’s 2019 class, there’s not much more room up to go for this sharpshooting wing. But he could be the next in that class to pick up an offer with his great size and ability to knock down shots from anywhere on the floor.
2018 Griffin Clark, 5’10 PG (Iowa Mavericks Purple 17U)
We’ve seen more of this kid than maybe anyone this spring, and each time he’s been marvelous. With blow-by quickness and always in control, the smart and savvy lead guard reminds up a ton of former Valley star Turner Scott, who is now playing at D2 Truman State.
2019 Dom Robertson, 6′ G (Iowa Mavericks Orange 16U)
It’s not too early to check out this rangy Oelwein combo-guard. He’s probably not a Division I prospect, but he’ll make a fine college player at the NAIA or Division II level. He’s got the body type of former North Scott and current Northwest Missouri State guard Grant Graham, and he’s on of those guys that just has a nose for the ball.
