Bill Hensley Run n Slam: Central Ohio 2020 Prospects
On Monday, we told you about the performances in the 2018 class. Yesterday and today, we’re looking at the underclassmen who stood out at the Bill Hensley Run n Slam in Fort Wayne. Over these four articles, which will be completed today, we will go through the classes of 2019 and 2020, segmented by region.
There was so many Central Ohio-based teams at the Run n Slam that we’re splitting the region into two parts. Below, you’ll find players exclusively from the 2020 class. Check yesterday’s content for the 2019 recap.
Chris Mayfield (2020), 6’3” W, All Ohio Red EYBL (sub from Mid Ohio Pumas) / Hilliard Bradley
It’s reasonable to argue that Mayfield is the best wing in the 2020 class. In fact, we’d probably agree with you at this very moment.
Mayfield is extremely long at 6’3 1/2”, carrying a plus-4.5” wingspan according to his Pumas coach. This length, combined with his instincts and consistency, creates a lot of problems for the other team when he’s on defense. Players often get rejected in the lane when they don’t come in ready for Mayfield’s length. Also, he can steal passes and pick pockets quite easily. On offense, Mayfield is hell-bent on making the correct basketball play. He drops passes on-time, but he’s always looking to put the ball in the rim. Basically, this kid really gets it and it’s aided by the fact that he’s also extremely gifted physically.
Dominiq Penn (2020), 6’0” PG, All Ohio Red EYBL / Dublin Coffman
Penn has a very impressive hesitation move. Once he gets a half step on the defender, Penn usually comes all the way to the basket, where he finishes with either hand. Otherwise, his points tend to come on stand-still three point bombs, which come after a series of jab steps. Penn creates an unusual amount of space on these jab steps, as defenders appear worried about being blown by.
Qian Magwood (2020), 5’10” PG, C2K Elite / Walnut Ridge
Magwood was trusted as the primary ball-handler on this guard-heavy C2K Elite team. He does a good job of handling pressure, taking care of the rock, and setting up his teammates for success. On one occasion, fellow guard CJ Anthony couldn’t miss, so Magwood just kept feeding him around the three-point line — that’s an important point guard quality to have.
There were also times when Magwood was the one feeling it. In these moments, Magwood was mostly getting all the way to the rim. He finishes in creative ways, often putting some English on the ball to make it spin through the cup. Super talented young point guard prospect.
VonCameron Davis (2020), 6’4” W, C2K Elite / Walnut Ridge
Davis can dominate a game for stretches from the elbow. Often, this team was working against a zone, and Davis just sat in that sweet spot and took what the defense gave him. From the triple-threat position, Davis can shoot, dribble, or pass equally well. It was scoring that he did best though, as his physicality and skill in the lane is very hard for other 2020 prospects to match.
Marcus Johnson (2020), 6’3” G, C2K Elite / Columbus South
Yet another interesting Columbus City League prospect. Johnson is incredible in transition, as he can fly by guys or out-muscle them at the rack. He also has good body control when dealing with flying defenders. While we think Johnson is going to develop into a big-time player, he needs to be more confident with the ball in his hands in the half-court. He’s a bit hesitant to shoot the ball when defenders sink, but it should come with time.
Matt Allocco (2020), 6’2” PG, All Ohio Red EYBL / Hilliard Bradley
We knew Allocco was one of the best point guards in the 2020 class for Ohio. But we didn’t quite know that he might be the best in that group. He definitely solidified his spot in that (somewhat arbitrary) discussion this weekend.
Allocco is a true point guard: he speaks truth to his teammates on the court when they’re not performing, while also being there for encouragement when it’s going well. He keeps the ball moving from side-to-side, but when the shot is there, his catch-and-shoot ability is elite. Also shot the ball off-the-bounce better than expected. Allocco scored a team-high 11 points in the second half against OBC, in arguably the best “Ohio v Ohio” game all Sunday long. Basically, he knows when to stop being passive and take the scoring into his own hands, which is important when you have the ability to do so.
Prep Hoops Ohio was informed from a reliable source that Allocco has received new Division I interest after this weekend.
CJ Anthony (2020), 5’10” PG, C2K Elite / Harvest Prep
Anthony has a very consistent jump shot from beyond the arch. As mentioned, he got hot in a game on Saturday and simply didn’t miss shots for an extended stretch. During that run, Anthony also converted a nifty reverse layup, to avoid a forward. Anthony showed good body language throughout, never getting too up or down about his play. Excited to watch more of the prospect from Harvest Prep.
