April’s Best: Class of 2019
At the beginning of April, we revealed our updated 2019 prospect rankings. Those are obviously subject to change over the next two years or so.
With that being said, the question we’re answering with this two-part article is: If we were to do another update right now, who would significantly rise up the charts, based solely on April’s performance?
These observations are both based on first-hand watching, but also research —whether that’s talking to coaches/insiders or keeping an eye on who is being offered scholarships because of their play.
Everyone knows that this is a huge summer for incoming juniors. It’s at this time when scouts spend some more time watching their games. It’s also a time when “potential” takes a backseat to “production,” at least in some respects.
By the way, some of these players aren’t even in the rankings currently. Also by the way, these players are in no particular order.
DJ Dial, 5’9” PG, C2K Elite / Cleveland Brush
Despite the size disadvantage, Dial is continuing to prove that he’s a Division I prospect. It seems that nearly all of the local D-I programs are keeping him high on their radar. According to his high school coach, Chet Mason, Dial not only has offers from Kent State and Cleveland State, there is serious interest from Ohio University and Youngstown State.
Spring offers: Cleveland State.
Andre Harris, 6’2” G, NEO Shooting Stars / Cleveland Brush
Harris’ offers come from the two schools that Dial also has, probably not a coincidence. Who knows if the Brush 2019 back-court is a package deal? All we do know is that these kids can play. Harris has incredible upside as a defensive player at the next level, as it’s there where his athleticism is most utilized. Also according to Mason, Miami (OH), Northwestern, and Toledo, are showing a ton of interest in Harris.
Spring offers: Cleveland State.
Nathan Bruns, 6’5” W, NWO Basketball Club / Marion Local
Our friends from Indiana were raving about Bruns at the Circle City Shootout. But PHI aren’t the only people who’ve taken notice, as we’ve had a few college coaches tell us to check out Bruns. He’s not currently in our rankings, which seems to be a glaring mistake. Looking forward to watching him going forward, as the skilled wing player is turning all of the important heads.
Spring offers: none reported.
Ethan Conley, 6’3” G, Dayton Metro / Franklin-Monroe
Before we had the chance to watch Conley perform in Indianapolis, we weren’t sure what level of college basketball he projects to be. We’re now convinced he’d be an absolute steal at the Division II level, as his potential should yield low-major Division I looks. In turn, #33 in the latest 2019 rankings feels a bit low. Conley is a super athlete who scores the ball with both finesse and power. Interested to see how seriously he takes defense going forward, as he could be special on that end too.
Spring offers: none reported.
Andre Gordon, 6’1” PG, All Ohio Red / Sidney
Gordon is a talented athlete, as he’s regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in America. He currently holds a football offer from Iowa State, according to 247 Sports.
Regardless, Gordon has been lighting it up for All Ohio Red this Spring. He’s reportedly been one of their best players during the first two EYBL sessions. Also, when we saw him in Columbus, there was little doubt that he’s one of Red’s top three guys. Smart athlete who can hurt the defense in the mid-range or right at the basket.
Spring offers: none reported.
Davin Zeigler, 6’2” PG, NEO Shooting Stars / Cleveland Benedictine
People have questions about Zeigler at the point guard position. We happen to not be concerned about the fact that he looks to score. Sure, it’s not for everybody, but there will definitely be a few colleges who would be willing to work with his effort-level and efficient scoring ability. We were informed that Zeigler is attracting new interest from three Division I colleges, stay tuned for more details.
Spring offers: N/A.
Miles “Deuce” McBride, 6’1” PG, NEO Shooting Stars / Archbishop Moeller
McBride is ranked #14 currently, but he’s probably top ten in reality. Not only is he smooth with the ball in his hands, McBride is a defensive beast. His arms are long and he has great footwork. On super talented Moeller and NEO Shooting Stars teams, McBride has continually been the most impressive prospect on the floor over the past couple months.
Spring offers: none reported.
