Select Classic: 16U Preview
The Select Classic 16U event has a large group of teams that decided not to leave the state and instead are playing at Lakeville South as part of a 27 team event.
The event is at Lakeville South this Saturday and Sunday and has a plethora of different type of teams. Lets start with the ranked squads.
Top 25 teams. There are seven top 25 ranked teams playing in the Select Classic this weekend which is an excellent number considering all the events around the country that Minnesota teams are playing in.
Select Koch is ranked 22nd after a 2-2 weekend in St. Cloud. Wear Out the Net Christianson is ranked 25th after getting a win over WC Orange and working their way into the better bracket of competition. TC Finest is 22nd after a 2-2 weekend in St. Cloud while Select Blue is 3-1 after beating WOTN 2 and Phenom (also in St. Cloud).
Comets L is ranked 15th with their highlight win coming against Powerhouse Minnesota. They are a 2-2 team as is the Southeastern Minnesota Lightning who is ranked 23rd. The final ranked team is Select Cobb who is like many of these others, ranked at 20 with a 2-2 record.
High School Teams. What high schools are in the Select Classic? Wayzata, Simley, Andover, Montevideo, and Lakeville South are all competing with the 16U talent over the weekend. Andover has made a strong effort to get their teams in these events and we’ve seen that pay off for teams over the years. Wayzata will be feared because they are such a good program and a big school so even though so many of their players are elsewhere, they still have the talent to compete.
Teams That Could Jump Into top 25. In St. Cloud we saw some talent and some good potential from Northern Lakers, WC Wildcats, Select Geiger, and the School Boys so this is a good chance for those teams to get the wins this weekend that they may have missed on two weeks ago. The Lakers and School Boys definitely had some players that caught eyes.
Starting Fresh! It’s impossible to know if some of these teams may have competed in a smaller event, a high school event someplace, or something of the like. But we at NHR believe that this will be the first weekend for Magic Cornell, Lace Up, High Impact, and SW Slam so it will be interesting to see what they can do in their debut. EOTO played in the D1 Spring Classic last weekend.
