Recruiting Report: Zion Griffin (2018)
Hinsdale South 2018 forward Zion Griffin was a complete beast when we saw him at Nike Spring Showdown! The 6’5” small forward did whatever he wanted on the floor. He has a physical body and bounce to match! Griffin has improved his handles over the last year. The Hinsdale South forward is best attacking on straight line drives. Glides to the hoop and explodes at the rim! At times he can struggle finishing through contact, but seems to be getting better at that. Jump shot has got better for the forward. He shoots it with a low release point. Best off the catch spotting up when his feet are set. Hit several, but also falls in love with it at times. In the post he seals well. Definitely transitioning his game into more of a small forward however. Snatches rebounds at a high point. Would like to see more volume on the boards. Defensively he is a good weakside shot blocker. Low-major D1 prospect that is inching his way closer to mid-major territory.
How was his junior campaign at Hinsdale South?
“I like to title us the underdogs. Ever since Barret Benson left they didn’t think we were going to make it anywhere. We showed everyone. I think I developed a lot over the season. At first to be honest I was scared to even dribble with my right hand, but as I developed through the season I learned I could do both.”
He spoke about his game and how that fits in with his Hooper Basketball Club team.
“For college I am trying to develop as a playmaker. My role on this team is to be a shot blocker, pump my team up, and score when I can. I am in the gym a lot working on ball handling and shooting consistently. I am trying to be an all-around player.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“I have talked to a couple colleges. They were telling me they were going to get further into recruiting me. I have heard from UAB, Minot State, and Western Illinois.”
UAB is one of the D1 schools that has made an early impression on him.
“They are competitive. He showed me a video of them playing and their school. I like schools that are competitive.”
Griffin landed an offer from D2 St. Cloud State at the conclusion of the first live period. Expect more to follow soon!
