Recruiting Report: Xavier Castaneda (2018)
Class of 2018 Xavier Castaneda is a 6’1” point guard that was the man running the show for Whitney Young in their state title season. He is the point man for Meanstreets 17U this spring. The floor general made nice dishes getting others involved and pushing it in transition during the Dolphins state title run. He has blow by speed breaking defenders down in one on one situations. Drive and kick ability. As a scorer he can hit an occasional mid-range. Most defenders play him as a passer first. Mid-major prospect with the chance to elevate to high-major. Biggest question with him is staying consistently healthy.
Castaneda spoke about his junior season and being their rivals Simeon in the state championship game.
“We had a great season. We had a bunch of ups and downs, but we came out as the victors. It was great. They had beat us two times earlier in the season and to come back to win was great.”
What areas of his game did he see the most improvement?
“I would say my jump shot. Showing scouts and people that I can shoot.”
The Whitney Young lead guard updated us on his recruitment.
“I have interest from Michigan State. I have offers from Kent State and Iowa State.”
He went into what he likes about Kent State.
“They are a real good school. They made it to the tournament this year which was big. Just getting to know them has been great.”
Iowa St has also extended an offer.
“They have contacted me a few times. Coach Prohm and his team made the tournament and had a good season too.”
Castaneda will have his opportunity to impress college coaches and scouts on the biggest stage in high school basketball this spring playing in the Nike EYBL.
