Recruiting Report: Tyus Arends (2018)
After a fine junior season with Sioux Center, Tyus Arends is starting to hear more from Area NAIA and Division II colleges, and hopes to have some scholarship offers by summer’s end.
His 17U season with South Dakota Attack is underway now, and he’ll get ample exposure around the Midwest playing with the talented squad this spring and summer.
“I definitely have stayed in contact with the same NAIA’s; Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Morningside,” said Arends. “And I’ve been talking to Sioux Falls for a while now. And then some new ones have come in like Augustana and Wayne State somewhat. So a couple of D2s have picked up interest, which is nice to see.”
Iowa’s 63rd-ranked 2018, Arends says that he’s been working lately to improve his his jumper and to shoot under pressure.
“I’ve really been working on shooting off the dribble, and I think I’ve definitely gotten better there. Shots aren’t coming as easily anymore, so I have to be able to move and get open and I thought I got a lot better at that this year,” said Arends.
“Defensively, I’m trying to get a lot better, and lastly I’m trying to get a lot bigger so I can finish around the bucket more consistently.”
He was sensational this past winter for the Warriors, averaging 18.8 points and connecting on 81 3s at a 45 percent clip.
“I was the primary scorer for our team and I enjoyed that,” said Arends. “Over the course of the season I thought I was pretty consistent, and if I didn’t score I thought I found other ways to contribute. I thought I had a high enough basketball IQ to find open teammates.”
As his offseason with South Dakota Attack 17U continues to unfold, Arends says the main goal is to simply win.
“I just want to win, last summer we struggled quite a bit. We’ve got a couple new pieces and I’m excited for that,” he said.
“What I’m expecting personally is, I want to pick up a couple offers; whether it’s D2 or a smaller D1, that’s definitely one of my goals.”
