Recruiting Report: Owen Coburn (2019)
Iowa’s 3rd-ranked 2019, 6-foot-10 center Owen Coburn is one of the few players from the state to pick up a Drake offer in the last several years.
That offer is an indication that he’s not only one of the Iowa’s most promising young bigs, but one of the Midwest’s best.
North Dakota has also offered the lengthy post, and several other schools — including Northern Iowa — have started to get involved.
“UNI did come to watch me a couple times which was nice, and I got down to one of their games. USD has come in the mix a little bit, I went to watch them play SDSU. And then North Dakota and Drake are still the main two,” said Coburn.
The Spirit Lake via H-M-S post was great this past winter as a sophomore, and now shifts his focus to his 16U season with the Martin Brothers.
Still with plenty of time remaining for his recruitment to materialize, Coburn says the main focus is simply winning games and improving.
“If it (recruitment) happens, it happens. This summer I’m looking for more exposure, but I think next summer when I’m fully developed is when it’ll happen. It just takes time, you got to be patient with it,” said Coburn.
“The offers will come, we have a lot of talent on our team and we’ve added some guys, so we’ll be playing in games that college coaches will see.”
He added: “I’m not really worried about the recruitment; the offers will come. It’s just about winning games and getting better.”
As a sophomore with the Indians, Coburn averaged 18.2 points on an absurd 70 percent shooting, 9.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.
It was a seamless transition from 1A to 3A for the talented D1 prospect.
“I like it a lot here, and I thought I played well. It’s a good fit for me, I like playing in this conference, and playing against better competition day-in and day-out makes me better,” said Coburn.
With an already developed set of post skills, he’s been working lately on moving his game out to the perimeter, in addition to refining his inside game.
“I’ve worked on my jump-shot a lot and being able to take it outside and handle the ball, that’s the biggest thing I’ve worked on. And then I’m gradually working on my post-moves,” said Coburn.
“I think my leadership was really good this year, being able to talk to my guys. And another thing I improved is my strength, I’ve been lifting four or five times a week and that’s helped a lot.”
