Recruiting Report: Kahlil Whitney (2019)
Class of 2019 small forward Kahlil Whitney was an absolute monster for the Fire when we saw him early in the spring! Whitney played his freshman season in Illinois at Solorio where he made waves as one of the higher upside prospects in the 2019 class. Transferred to Roselle Catholic (NJ) for his sophomore year. His skill set has really evolved and is showing off a hybrid game. He dunked literally everything around the rim. Gets on the offensive glass for tip ins and dunks. Showing more skill than we saw last summer. Looked more confident shooting it from both mid-range and three. Monster potential on the defensive end. High-major 2019 prospect.
How was his year at Roselle Catholic?
“It went good. We came up short losing to St. Pat’s four times. They were a better team. Individually I did my thing. I put points on the board for my team. I played defense and got my teammates in the game. We will be good next year.”
Whitney has definitely made significant strides in one particular area of his game.
“Shooting the ball. Last year I didn’t shoot the ball that good. This year I shot it better. I don’t know what percentage I shot, but I shot it much better. Overall just being more aggressive putting the ball on the floor.”
Despite playing his high school ball in New Jersey, Whitney will run with his hometown Mac Irvin Fire 16U this spring.
“It is great. This is a new group. I didn’t play with these guys last year so there will be some ups and downs, but we have potential and I think we can win Peach Jam this year.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“Rutgers. St. John’s I keep in touch with them a lot. Kansas has been recruiting me. Seton Hall, Maryland, and Providence. UConn came to watch me in open gym.”
Many of those schools have already extended offers.
“Syracuse, Seton Hall, Providence, DePaul, UIC, Rutgers, St. John’s, and more.”
Whitney has been out to visit three of the schools that have offered him. He broke down each one of them.
St. John’s
“It was great. The atmosphere was amazing. I went to their late night.”
Rutgers
“I went to the football game. They got killed, but I liked the atmosphere and how the fans were chanting my name.”
Seton Hall
“I went to the Seton Hall vs Villanova game. My dad played there.”
