Recruiting Report: Christopher Burnell (2019)
At 6’3” Rockford East 2019 shooting guard Christopher Burnell has a nice combination of strength and athleticism. Plays both on and off the ball, but is more of a natural scorer at this stage in his development. Burnell is a “bucket getter” that makes it look easy at times. Attacks downhill where he can either finish through contact or dish off to open shooters on the perimeter. D1 prospect that will be playing with the Illinois Stars this spring. We caught up with him to get an update on his early recruitment and more!
He spoke with PHI about his sophomore season at Rockford East.
“It went alright. A couple ups and downs. I think overall I had a good season. My mid-range game got better, running the floor, and being a point guard skills.”
Burnell is trying to add more lead guard abilities to his repertoire.
“I had to work on reading the floor and look at being able to throw passes up the floor. Working on my mid-range game and handling the ball.”
The wing averaged 15 points per game this past season. What does he feel the strengths are in his game?
“Getting to the basket because I am a bigger guard. I get to the basket easy.”
He will be running with the Illinois Stars this spring.
“I am looking to put us out there and give us a name in Illinois. I think we are going to be really good this year. I am trying to show college coaches I am a good guard and a good teammate and a good leader on the floor.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“During the school year I had one of the coaches from Wisconsin come to my game. I went on an unofficial visit to Providence when they played Butler.”
He talked about the Providence visit during the season.
“It was fun. They show a lot of love. I went to their summer camp last summer so that was my second time there. It was nice to meet the coaches and players. They told me to keep working on my game and get stronger as a guard. Work on my abilities.”
