Prospect Spotlight: Garett Maag (2018)
Minnesota Select Ohnstad is one of the top AAU teams in the state because of the collective athleticism and versatility. One of their top players in St. Croix Lutheran forward Garett Maag.
The 6-foot-5 combo forward averaged 15 points for the Crusaders in his junior year and is spending the AAU season with Select Ohnstad — a team without a great deal of size, but a boatload of toughness and athleticism.
“We’re a little undersized but I think we can use it to our advantage because we have great speed,” said Maag. “We play really well as a team.”
Maag’s an interesting player in that he’s got the size and strength to play inside but also the ball skills and shooting ability to play on the perimeter. He’s one of the taller guys on Select Ohnstad so he has to defend the opposition’s biggest players most games. But he’s also a matchup nightmare on the other end.
It’s very early in the recruiting process for Maag, but he’s already drawn a fair amount of interest in both basketball and football.
“I’m kind of in the middle right now,” said Maag on his preference to play football or basketball. “I’ve got Bemidji State, Upper Iowa, Winona and I’ve gotten a little interest from Elon and the Citadel [for hoops].”
Select Ohnstad’s got a lot of guys to watch throughout the summer for college coaches at almost any level. They’ll win a lot of games. Maag’s a big part of that.
“I’m just going to try to do my best and get better every day,” said Maag. “Get our team better and see how well we can do. I think we can do really well this year.”
