Player Spotlight: Isaiah Wilder (2019)
Name: Isaiah Wilder | School: Goldsboro High School | Height: 6’5″ | AAU: NC Red Storm
Isaiah Wilder is a powerfully built 6’5″ wing from Goldsboro, NC. Currently running with the NC Red Storm, it’s easy to take a look at this kid and assume he’s already been through a weightlifting program at a college. Already possesses the frame and athleticism to handle the physicality that comes with playing at the next level. However, Wilder is only a sophomore that produces at a high level and still has much room to improve before he graduates high school in 2019.
Strengths – Offensively, Wilder is a big-time mismatch at the high school level. Big forwards and post players just aren’t quick enough to stay in front of him. He blows by big men with relative ease. Guys that are giving up size to him aren’t strong enough to handle him on the block. He’s very efficient using minimal dribbles to get to the hoop where he finishes above the rim. Defensively, he has quick feet and tons of room to grow into a defensive stopper should he put his mind to it. Is an above average shot blocker in weakside help situations and rises off the ground really quickly to pin shots against the glass while avoiding contact for fouls.
Weaknesses – In spurts, he can over-dribble, especially in transition. Much harder to guard when he just uses his jab step and first step to get to the rim. When his feet are set, he’s a solid shooter, but must not fall in love with his jump-shot. Should he continue to work on his understanding of when to venture out to the perimeter and when not to, opposing teams will be in trouble.
If you’re a college program that likes quick, strong and athletic wings that can venture inside in spurts, then Wilder is one you will like and want to get a jump on early. He’s currently running with the NC Red Storm AAU team. (Same team which recently produced Campbell star guard Chris Clemons and Cincinnati star forward Gary Clark). Wilder ver well could become a college ready inside/outside wing from day 1 should he continue to develop.
