The Bearcat Classic: Club Ohio vs. Dayton Metro (Benners-2018) 17u
With the Grassroots season in full swing, Prep Hoops was in Cincinnati Saturday for one of the premier events of the season, the Ohio Basketball Bearcat Classic. With 11 venues being used, The Bearcat Classic was a field with hundreds of good teams which means there was a lot of good talent on the courts. Let’s take a look at some of the action from Saturday at Walnut Hills High School.
Club Ohio (57) vs. Dayton Metro (33) – Unfortunately this game was filled with clock errors and lackluster officiating, but that did not stop Club Ohio from controlling this game from beginning to end. The length and athleticism of the Club Ohio squad was too overcome for a Metro team that settled for a lot of tough, contested jumpers. With two players in the post 6’6 and taller along with two wing players 6’4 and taller, Club Ohio continuously altered shots in the paint and got their hands in the passing lane which led to many transition buckets. Club Ohio also did a good attacking the offensive glass which led to many wide-open looks on the perimeter.
The Club Ohio attack was led by class of ‘18 G/W Jeremiah Davenport (Cincinnati Moeller) along with class of ’18 point guard Steve Stewart (Cincinnati Shroder). Davenport continued the strong play that he displayed State Finals weekend in Columbus by attacking the rim at will. Davenport was able to convert numerous And-1 situations throughout the game while also showing a solid mid-range jumper.
Stewart also had a strong and showed a much improved shooting stroke compared to the regular season. The 6’0 senior connected on four 3’s while also being aggressive in regards to attacking the rim and drawing fouls and making plays for others. It was a really solid performance for Stewart.
