2015 G Mark Matthews is re-opening his recruitment
Two years ago Mark Matthews committed to play at UNC-Wilmington. This past season he moved over to USC-Aiken and on Tuesday announced via Twitter that he’s re-opening his recruitment.
Matthews, 2015 Ft. Myers graduate who averaged 25.8 points per as a senior for the Green Wave says he’s looking to play at the Divison-I level once again.
The 6’6″, 215-pounder appeared in 23 games at UNCW as a freshman which included three double digit outings including an 18-point game.
He started 25 of 26 games this past season at USC-Aiken where he averaged 15.5 points 8.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He led the Pacers in points, field goal percentage (52.5) and rebounds. Matthews was named all-Peach Belt and won player of the week twice as a sophomore.
From his previous stops, he says he learned experience and postseason experience overall.
Matthews pointed to his versatility, ability to play and guard multiple positions as his biggest strengths. He said he’s seen his reads defensively improve drastically since playing in the college ranks.
Here’s how he sees himself fitting at his new school.
“I’m able to score in a variety of ways and play my game being able to bring the ball up the floor rebound and make plays out of pick and roll as well,” Matthews told Prep Hoops Florida.
Aiming to get back into the Division-I ranks was one of the big reasons for his decision this week.
Matthews is an exercise science major. Before games, he listens to Travis Scott to get himself pumped up.
For now, he’s looking for a new college program and Division-I is really where he belongs. He is a long player who hustles on both ends of the floor. Playing Division-II this past season gave him valuable playing time to be a leader and now he’s better prepared for the top level of college basketball. Look for Matthews to make his presence felt as a junior wherever he lands.
