Recruiting Report: Corey Johnson (2018)
Thibodaux 6-foot- point guard Corey Johnson has had a string of bad luck with his health the past nine months, but is close to being ready to make his mark on the 17U circuit.
Louisiana’s 25th-ranked 2018, Johnson played one game during his junior season after tearing some ligaments in his foot. After that only game back, he got sick getting sick and was out for the remainder of the season.
If that wasn’t enough, Johnson broke his wrist last weekend. He went up for a layup during a tournament with Louisiana Lightning, and when the opponent tried to take a charge they collided, causing Johnson to come down on his wrist.
He’ll be ready to play again in May, and that’s when his 17U season with the Lighting will officially begin.
And that’s when he’s hoping his recruitment may take off.
“I don’t have any offers, but I have some schools interested like; Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, LSU-A, Charleston and Nebraska,” said Johnson.
“Northwestern State has been coming at me pretty hard since my freshman year, and LSU-A has invited me to a couple of their games. The other schools just send me letters and camp invited and stuff like that.”
Though he hasn’t played much the past year, Johnson says his leadership skills have sharpened since he’s more-or-less been a coach to his teammates.
He defined what skills he’ll bring to the table later this spring when he’s ready to play again.
“I like to get other people involved in the game, I see myself as a pass-first point guard, but I’m transitioning into a scorer at the same time,” he said.
“I’m working on using my left hand a lot, and my shooting off the dribble.”
With so much time off, Johnson is naturally eager to get back into game action in May, and he says he’s feeling good about his return.
“I’m feeling good going into my 17U season,” said Johnson. “I’m hoping I pick up a couple offers this summer, and I’m just going to be working on my game.”
