Prospect Spotlight: Jamon Mack (2018)
A two-sport star from Cohen College Prep, 6-foot-3 power forward Jamon Mack never thought basketball would be an option for him in college, but that may be starting to change.
Always a football player first, the junior says basketball — which he’s only been playing since high school started — is becoming as enjoyable for him as football.
“Basketball to me is like a second sport because I’ve always been a football player. Growing up I had always been a football player, and I was always getting recruited for football, but then I started playing basketball my freshman year and I really liked it, and I started seeing if I could play at the next level for basketball,” said Mack, who says he’d be open to any basketball interest that would come his way.
“My favorite sport right now is football, but I love playing basketball too.”
A gritty, D-first player, Mack is all about the grind on the defensive end. But is working now to sharpen his skills offensively.
“My strength as a player is I love to play defense. I don’t like offense like I love defense, and my strength on the court is I can guard any position,” said Mack.
“What I need to work on most is my ball-handling. Right now, since basketball season is over, I’m in the gym 24/7, and working on my ball-handling most of the time.”
With his junior season wrapped-up, Mack reflected on what he says was his best high school season yet.
“This was my best year of high school; we got a new coaching staff and they showed me a lot of things,” he said. “I really started developing as a good player this season for Cohen Prep.”
This spring he’ll play his 17U offseason, and his main priority is getting better for his senior season.
“I’m just hoping I can improve on my game, so I can get better for next season and help my school out,” said Mack.
