Louisiana Top 28: Division III All Tournament Teams
1st Team
Jared Butler 6’3 2018 G Riverside Academy
Jared Butler had a masterful season all year long, and this game was no different, as he looked like a man amongst boys. Country Day simply had no one on their roster that was capable of stopping him, as he had a game high 26 points. I am looking forward to seeing how Butler plays this summer, as a knee injury kept him from playing on the EYBL circuit last year. Providing health, he has a shot at jumping into the top three in Louisiana for the 2018 class. f
Jordan Wright 6’5 2019 G Dunham
Wright is the top ranked prospect in the state for 2019, and he showed all weekend why. He was far and away the best player for Dunham in their semi-final matchup against Episcopal, dropping a game high 27 points. Not only did he show his offensive prowess, but also his defensive ability, picking up a crucial block on what would have been a game tying field goal in the final 30 seconds for Episcopal. In the state finale, he gave it his all, but Dunham is still a year away from truly competing with the best of the best in Division III.
Cameron Dumas 5’8 2018 G Episcopal
Dumas did a great job of following the coach’s gameplan in their semifinal game. While his nine points scored might not jump off the page for you, he did a masterful job of controlling the pace and not making mistakes. Because of his play, Episcopal made Dunham earn the win, and it was within a one possession game for nearly its entirety.
Justin Ibieta 6’5 2020 G Country Day
The rich just keep getting richer don’t they? Country Day is currently in the midst of one of the best runs in Louisiana history, winning three of the last four state championships, and with the young talent that they have in Ibieta, as well as some other impressive young pieces in 2019 G Kaleb Jenkins and 2020 G Shawn Royal, I don’t see any reason for this run to come to an end. Ibieta is a really big guard that was the second leading scorer for Country Day in the state title game. I look forward to his development the next few years.
Romin Williams MVP 5’10 2017 G Country Day (Emory College commit)
Romin Williams’ high school career has finally come to a conclusion, and what a career it has been. He came into this Top 28 with two rings already, and it only seems fitting to get one his senior year, making him the most winnigest player in Country Day’s illustrious history. With records dating back to 1961, there are only 26 schools with more championships than Romin. Not players. Schools. So it was only fitting that he scores 26 points in the championship game.
2nd Team
Mike Wilson 6’3 2018 F Dunham
Wilson did a good job of providing second fiddle for Dunham’s squad in the semifinals, and played his role well, finishing dumpdowns and rebounding hard. He was the second leading scorer for Dunham in both games.
Brandan Garrido 5’10 2019 G
Garrido did a great job providing energy and instant offense off the bench. He has a deceptively quick first step, and he has the ability to score in bunches. I was surprised to find out how young he was, with such a polished game.
Salle Wilson 6’4 2020 G
Wilson had one of the most important plays of Dunham’s season, as he had a putback off a Jordan Wright miss with under a minute to go in the semifinal game to give Dunham a lead they would never relinquish. That type of calm and poise as only a freshman was impressive to see. To have such advanced guard skills at so tall and so young is rare to see, and Wilson has to chance to be truly special. This team is going to be very fun in two years.
Kaleb Jenkins 5’9 2019 G
While Jenkins might not have shown the true extent of his game during the Top 28, we were able to see glimpses of what the sophomore is capable of when Romin Williams was on the bench. During that time, he was able to slide from the 2 to his natural position at the 1, with the ball in his hand. While he has big shoes to fill in behind Romin next season, I think he is going to succeed as his teams lead ball handler and decision maker.
Garland Robertson 5’10 2018 G
Robertson had a rough game in the semifinals, but his game is capable of much more. He is a deadly shooter from downtown, and if his ballhandling skills can catch up over the offseason, Riveriside is going to be right back to the Top 28 again next season.
