- Bonnabel
In my opinion, Bonnabel was the best team this season that didn’t win a state championship. They made it to the state championship game after beating Chalmette, breaking up the 1-1 tie the two teams had in district this year. In that game, TJ Collins absolutely went off, and did a great job attacking 7 footer Mitchell Robinson. They ended up falling in the title game, but overall it was a historic season for Bonnabel.
- Ellender
All season, it was a tale of two teams for Ellender. There are very few teams in the state that can beat Ellender when they are playing their best. However, it was always a question whether or not that team would show up, or if it would be the team that lost to Assumption by eight. Once playoff time started, the patriots turned it up, and came just a few possessions short from winning a state championship.
- Chalmette
The Owls of Chalmette had a historic season, and it started and ended with Western Kentucky commit Mitchell Robinson. The 7 footer has the skills to play like a guard, and he was far and away the best senior of the 2017 class. It isn’t very often that you will find an athlete like that walking through the halls of Chalmette, and it is a shame that coach Butch Stockton didn’t get a state championship ring out of it.
- St. Augustine
In the most St. Augustine way possible, they lost in the state semi-finals 32-33 in overtime. That is the record in the Top 28 for least points combined between two teams. There are simply too many athletes on the Purple Knights roster to only score 32 points in an overtime game, and unless that is changed, they won’t be winning a state championship any time soon.
- St. Thomas More
Two inches. That is all that separated the Cougars from participating in their fourth state championship game in school history. On a two foot bunny with just under a second to go, the shot came up just short. However, this was another impressive season for a historic program. I expect Jonathan Cisse to take an even bigger role next season.
- Southern Lab
After getting off to a rocky 1-2 start, I was worried that Southern-Lab was really starting to feel the loss of Dexter Dennis transferring to Baker for his senior year this year. However, Coach Devan Clark did a fantastic job of retooling, and Southern Lab went on a run that included only two regular season losses starting in mid-December. The kittens came up a game short, but I expect them to be right back in the title game next season.
- East Ascension
I am sure that this season didn’t end the way that the Spartans would have liked, ideally, but this was still a season to be proud of for them. They won a total of 27 games playing undoubtedly one of the toughest schedules in the state. They will be losing a lot of talent heading into next year, and I will be interested in seeing how they reload.
