Louisiana Div. IV All-State Selections
First Team:
Caleb Starks 6’3 G 2017 LCA (Northwestern St. Commit)
Starks was able to use springboard a very successful high school career into a D1 scholarship offer. As the son of a coach, he doesn’t make many mistake on the offensive end, and he is capable of getting to the rim and finishing over the defense as well as knocking down jumpers from the outside. However, his bread and butter is on the defensive end, where he is capable of locking down the other teams best player.
Azahren Ernest 6’5 F 2017 Southern Lab
Ernest is a kid that never stops, and that high motor allowed him to get to where he is today. On defense, he is able to use his athleticism and wingspan to protect the rim at a high level. On the offensive end, he is more than capable of bullying defenders down in the low post. As the season went on, he showed more comfort playing on the wing, and consistently knocked down the 15 footer.
Eli Mouton 5’8 G 2018 Ascension Episcopal
Mouton is an incredibly flashy guard that can do it all on the offensive end. He can use his elite handles to get to the rim whenever he wants, and he finishes at a rate that you wouldn’t expect from someone of his stature. He is capable of knocking down shots from beyond NBA range, and in my opinion is one of the most underrated players in the 2018 class.
Camren Hare 6’3 G 2017 Hamilton Christian
Hare did most of the work for his team from behind the three point line this season, however, he is a sneaky good athlete. I thought he did a much better job this year making the correct read with the ball in his hands and showed that he is capable of running the lead guard spot at the next level.
Greg Williams MVP 6’3 G 2018 LCA
This season, Greg Williams played like a boy amongst men, and what’s crazy is that he still has a year left of high school. He is one of the most athletic players in the state, and he is one of the few that has the skill level to match his athleticism. He was good for at least one nasty dunk a game, and knocked down over a three per game on 43% shooting from downtown. He spent this year squashing any knocks that he might have heard in the past about not asserting himself enough, and I look forward to seeing him assert himself even more next season.
Second Team:
Jalen Johnson 6’4 F 2017 Central Catholic (UL Lafayette football commit)
Johnson is another elite athlete in this group. He has the size and length to really affect the game on the defensive end, with shot blocking and rebounding. On the offensive end, he showed an improved skill set, and he looked much more comfortable attacking from the wing this season.
Keenan Fontenot 5’10 G 2017 Hamilton Christian
Fontenot was the second leading scorer for Hamilton Christian, but he lead them in every other category. On defense, he was tasked with defending the other team’s best player, and excelled in that role. On offense, he was very effective at setting up teammates and averaged over 5 assists per game.
Trent Washington 6’3 F 2018 Houma Christian
Trent Washington was the most skilled player for a Houma Christian team that was good enough to make the Top 28. The smooth shooting lefty is able to use his size advantage to simply shoot over people from the outside, but he is going to need to continue to get better at using his size in the paint.
Tyreon “Speedy” Payne 5’10 G 2017 Southern Lab
Speedy is a very heady guard, and that in combination with his speed is something dangerous. He is capable of getting into the paint at will, and will finish if the helpside defense doesn’t step up. When the defense does step up, he is capable of making the easy pass, and had the most assists for Southern Lab this year
Trevian Lane 6’6 F 2018 Vermilion Catholic
Lane is a new school forward that is just as dangerous from the outside as he is in the paint. He seems to have a high understanding of the game, and I wonder how good he might be in more of a distributor role if he had better teammates. However, he was still able to be far and away the best player on a pretty good VC team this year.
